Converting from a tanked water heater to tankless is always a major renovation. That being said, after almost a week long retrofit of the water heater closet and installation of the new Rheem Performance Platinum 9.0 GPM Liquid Propane High Efficiency Indoor Tankless Water Heater. The unit fired up on first try and is extremely quiet. I was very surprised at the low temperature exhaust while the unit is heating water. A few words of caution if you are a DIY guy like me. When ordering on line, the web site may recommend the purchase of Rheem 3 in. PVC Horizontal or Vertical Concentric Vent Termination Kit. This vent kit is mostly for new construction applications and not well suited for renovations. Also my local Home Depot dose not support the installation as they do not carry 3" PVC pipe. The unit comes with a side wall mounted vent termination that is fairly easy to install.

So far, so good. It took our plumber about 8 hours to complete the switchout from old tank heater to this new tankless. One month after installation, I don't notice any change in how long it takes for the tap to get hot, nor any decrease in hot water flow with, say, two showers and a dishwasher running simultaneously. Still waiting to see my first gas bill to see if there's any savings, energy-wise.

I installed this to replace an aging bosch whole house heater. Im so happy i did. Absolutely great product hands down. Zero, yes i said zero water fluctuations whatsoever. You set the temperature, and this puppy puts out. Not like the bosch, which had cold spots from day one. Recommend you are advanced to professional to install thou, due to the plumbing and gas lines need to be perfect for obvious safety reasons. When this Power house is running, it is super quiet. I had to actually look to make sure it was running. Although just testing the hot water is good enough, but you get my point.the only complaint i have is that the intake air cannot be user chosen location on top of the unit. It has provisions for a left intake port and no right side intake. But thats more aesthetic than function. And the icing on the cake is that its super efficient. Just love this whole house water heater.

i had this water heater professionally installed, been using for about 3 weeks. I think it's taking a longer time to heat up water than I anticipated and I live in Orange County, CA, which outside temperature is around 50 degrees at night and around 70 in the day during winter time. I'd expect it to heat up faster for such an expensive unit.

I bought this unit 7 months ago and just got around to installing it because I had to install the 3" PVC venting. Since I was remodeling the bathroom above the utility room, so I was able to run the two pipes vertically through the roof. I used a concentric termination. It took me two days to install this unit with my neighbor. It's not hard, but labor-intensive. I used the recommended service valves. Before buying this unit, I researched it to death and knew, thanks to TexasHillSurfer's review here, to look for a loose clip before installation. There was no loose clip in the cabinet so I installed it. Big mistake. It turns out the clip is missing altogether. So when I finally turned on the water to the unit, I was greeted with a water fountain! It was after 7pm CST, so I called Rheem this morning. Henry walked my through looking for the clip: at the bottom right of the unit is a black hockey-puck-looking-thing that is a magnet and he said it's usually there. Mine wasn't. The cheap individual clips are not available by themselves so the entire unit has to be replaced! Rheem has sent a work order over to a local contractor and they are now trying to fit me into their schedule in the coming days. In the meantime, we have no hot water. If a missing $2 piece renders a $1000 water heater unusable, I can't recommend it. UPDATE: The contractor says that since I installed it, I have to remove the unit, take it to Home Depot and bring a new one back. They say that Rheem only reimburses them $150 and that I will have to pay for the re-install!! DO *NOT* BUY THIS UNIT!

Have been using for almost a month now with no regrets. It arrive from H. D. very quick and in good shape. After figuring out how I was going to re-route the plumbing and gas lines from the 20 year old standard water heater to this unit, installation was straight forward. The hardest part for me turned out to be where I was going to run the vent and intake pipes out the roof and how I was going to get there. The old exhaust vent went into a chimney but that's not a option with this unit. Some reviewers said their unit was noisy, but mine is very quiet. Yes, it does take a little longer to get hot water at the faucet but not by much. Two thumbs up!

Great product! Reason for purchase is we eplaced another brand's tankless water heater that was only 7 years old that had already a major repair done 2 years ago, and now failed again and it is out of warranty. Our professional installer recommended this brand (had installed other ones of this brand before and has had very good experience with them) and installation was fast and product looks great. Very quiet and we like the control to vary the outlet temperature. IMPORTANT: Make sure you purchase the "Rheem brass tankless service valves" as they are NOT supplied with the heater. Had installer come twice for this reason. I believe they should be included with the heater as they are key to the proper installation. Other than this, great experience and hope a long life out of it.

This review is primarily directed toward DIY homeowners. The only reason I wouldn't recommend this unit right now, is because there's a minor known issue with it. I'm not done installing the second unit I've ordered, after returning the first. There are two clips used in this unit (and possibly others) that aren't being installed correctly. The first unit simply didn't have them. The second unit had them rattling around in the cabinet. If you buy one, pull the cover off before you apply water pressure. They're simple enough to fix if they're in the cabinet. Call the support number and they'll walk you through it. It took them only a few second looking at the photo I sent in of the interior to know why the first unit leaked. That tells me it's a common issue. Rheem phone tech support is fantastic. Good attitude and knowledgeable. You should call them to register your unit, and be prepared to send in a copy of your receipt to ensure that the warranty starts when you buy it. In my case, the current unit was manufactured in July 2017, but with the receipt I sent them my warranty starts in August. Rheem email or online tech support has been totally useless so far. I've received on response from emails I've sent. I've also received no response from Home Depot to emails I've sent about this unit. I guess they don't really know how to use email yet. I'll amend this review later, after I've finished installation (or not), and possibly after I've had it in service for a time. There's quite a bit more to installing this than a tank type water heater, or even a less efficient tankless, which I'm replacing. -This unit requires a 3/4" gas line. The BTU rating is probably higher than anything else you have in your house, and several times what a tank type water heater requires. Tank type water heaters slowly heat the water in the tank. This one immediately heats the water being used. -I recommend installing a flush valve set with a pressure relief valve. I don't know how often it should be flushed, but when you do, this valve set makes it much simpler. -Both the intake pipe and exhaust need to be routed outside. Schedule 40 PVC is all that's required. Home Depot sells a concentric vent that can be used to route both pipes out the roof or through a wall, most likely through the hole that's already there for a standard gas water heater vent. -It requires a condensate drain line, and a standard AC wall outlet nearby. It's heavy, around 80 lbs, so it's best to have someone to help hang it. It first hangs on a single screw which makes it easier. I mounted mine fairly high on the wall to facilitate installing a drain and the plumbing under it. I also added a whole house water filter and descaler canister in the cold water line going to it. And, I installed a check valve in the cold line to keep hot water from going back into the cold line. I've read where that will also keep it from lighting up momentarily when cold water is used elsewhere in the house.

The heater itself is great, our only complaint is that it's loud. We mounted it to the back side of a partition wall in the basement and the sound carries into the finished room(s) and up into the main living floor. This may not be an issue if the unit is isolated better from walls and floor joists. There is an understandable increase in the time it takes to get hot water to the taps with this unit vs. a water tank. The trade-off is worth it though with the endless supply of consistently hot water! We chose the 9 GPM unit because we need a 65+ degree rise in water temp, which derates the unit to somewhere around 6 GPM. At that point we've successfully had the shower and washing machine running while doing hand dishes and we saw no loss of pressure or temperature. We did get a P1 (Low Flow) code (which stops the heating) while using a trickle of hot water which was over come by opening the tap slightly more. There were a few gotchas specific to our install which may or may not be common. First of all, the install was actually easy (for an experienced DIYer.) We discovered that with this unit installed our max gas demand would be over 350,000 BTUs/hr so we technically needed a larger capacity gas meter, which the gas company installed free of charge (we didn't experience any issues in the week and a half before we got the larger meter installed though.) Second, our 65 year old house had 1/2" gas lines, which the water heater shared with the range. We increased the gas lines so that the water heater could get the 3/4" it requires and not starve the other appliances. Our house also had 1/2" copper water water lines (after the meter) which we increased to 3/4" PEX/SharkBite to support the 3/4" the heater requires. Prior to that we had an issue where turning on either the Hot or the Cold water at another point in the house would affect the hot water pressure. We also had to purchase a condensate pump as we had no suitable floor drain. Lastly, finding a suitable place for air intake and exhaust was a challenge in our house. We didn't have any joist bays fully empty to support the side-by-side venting for the included kit so we had to purchase the concentric vent pipe. We've had the unit for just over a month and love it so war. Some other brands will display incoming water temp, flow rate, outgoing water temp, etc. which would have been nice/interesting but not essential. We feel that opting for the more expensive condensing unit didn't cost us any more in the long run considering all venting is done with PVC vs. very expensive stainless.

DIED WITHIN A YEAR - WARRANTY NOT BEING HONORED
Our experience with this heater has not been pleasant. I am giving this feedback hoping it to be helpful. The heater would occasionally hiccup where we would switch it off, then turn it back on which would restore it back to working condition, until it finally died 3 days ago, less then a year after being installed. 1) According to the warranty terms, this heater's warranty begins (effective date) from the date of install or 90 days plus date of manufacture if the date of install is not properly documented. This is a full warranty for a period of 1 year. Rheem is not honoring this and saying that the warranty on this heater began at the date of manufacture, at which time I had not even purchased the heater from HomeDepot. Even after providing them with HomeDepot receipts showing a purchase date of 6/29/15, they are saying that the warranty began on 6/2/15. This reduces my full 1 year warranty which they advertise down to 8 months. 2) The heater has completely died 11 months after being installed. The bottom has rust on it. I am attaching a picture. 3) Attempting to avail warranty, I systematically get transferred from one representative to another. I felt it was a game they were playing. One representative told me that they want more pictures, another told me that I should take out the board to see what the blower motor looks like. According to the product warranty terms, the unit currently is under full warranty, not even a year old, and I think the customer should not have to do any diagnosing. We live in Western, NY where the weather is extremely cold. I have 3 children in this house, and have told them that we coninuously need hot water. I spent half day yesterday on this and am not in the mood of getting degraded any further trying them to honor the advertised warranty.

          Don't buy this unit ECOH160XLN
We had this unit installed 8 months ago. Absolutely love not running out of hot water. it does take a few minutes for the hot water to get to the faucet. The reason for the low rating is because our unit was installed by a master plumber. Last week of hot water froze. After a couple of days it thawed and everything was fine. Then a couple of days later water was coming out of it everywhere. Called warranty department. The warranty department says that their outdoor unit isn't covered against freezing. What good is an outdoor unit if it can't withstand the climate. They will not stand behind their products.

            Delivery Issues
This is our second Rheem Platinum water heater. This one is an outdoor 180K natural gas model. I'm sure it will be as outstanding as the first. This review relates to the Home Depot delivery. The WH showed up a day early (yay), but it was unexpected. The driver left this $1,200.00 box on the front porch, water heater picture facing the street, no attempt to put it behind the column he placed it next to, and worst of all, didn't ring the door bell. Thank God for dogs telling us someone was out front. No, it didn't get stolen but in this area (Los Angeles Suburbs) it would have been. I'd like to give the delivery 2 stars but don't want to ding the Rheem product.
