Q:My installation would be outdoors but inside the old water heater cabinet. Should I use the indoor unit and use the existing vent or is it safe to use the outdoor unit inside the cabinet? Or of course, use the outdoor unit and remove the cabinet?

Easy install works well so far
Installed on the outside of my home to replace the unit that was inside the closet just on the other side of the wall. Used SharkBite fitting to take the pipes through the wall which worked very well so far.
Easy install for even a novice plumber!

Great so far-still new
Just got this in 3 days ago, the install went easy, instructions are good. Unit is very quiet, I was concerned a bit because I was hanging it outside my daughters room (outside model) and thought it might be loud, but its super quiet. Water temp is spot on when I measured the temp in the house, heats up pretty quick. I do get a P1 error when turning the shower water down to a dribble (washing the dog) which means the pressure is too low (SOLUTION: TURN UP WATER VOLUME AT FAUCET). I have a small house and getting rid of my tank water heater for this outside smaller unit is GREAT. Also, its made in Japan, so I assume its gonna be quality.

Easy install?
I was hesitant to purchase a tankless water after reading many reviews and cost of installation. My home was built in 1957 so it had galvanized piping throught out. This included the water being IN the house across from the bathroom, unbelievable. Is this item a straight forward install? No, not at all. After about $2500 in all new PEX plumbing and a new main line from the street, moving the water heater outside was worth all the time and hassel. I should have been a plumber. Ugh. Anyway, Rheem makes a great product and have been making water heaters for years. I recommend reseaching whats going to be the best for your needs. My second choice was going to be the PVC venting Rheem. That one had the easiest venting around. If you’re going to have it installed, call many people for quotes. Ask to see install pictures and if they are really good installers, they should have them. Who doesnt take pictures of their handy work?? Everyone has phones, lets be real about it. Also, not every install will be straight forward. Be prepared for things to come up that werent quoted in the initial bid, especially with plumbing. YouTube it.

We've been using this for about 2 weeks. Works well, very quiet, and plenty of hot water. Installation is pretty straight forward for someone with a little experience. It comes with good installation information. I had searched everywhere online to no avail for good detailed information about this model in particular prior to purchasing, especially about how the remote control works. Information on the cosmetic pipe cover (available separately) was impossible to find, in particular which models it was compatible with. There are two different pipe covers to choose from and no one could give me a correct answer as to which one would fit, not even Rheem themselves. Fortunately the pipe cover comes with the correct detailed information about which models it fits. Why doesn't someone post that online, like Home Depot or Rheem? What a pain since it isn't stocked and must be shipped. The pipe cover mounting is awkward to install. I had to modify it with two brackets to install it in my particular case. Anyway, I'm happy with the final result.

This heater was reasonably easy to install, runs quietly and looks great. Though this unit comes with an internal recirculating pump controller, I elected to combined an ultra-efficient recirculating pump with an app controlled Wi-Fi switch/countdown timer instead. This allows me to turn on the recirculating pump using an app on my phone from anywhere in the house. When the programmed time has elapsed, the pump turns off automatically so that I do not have to remember to switch it off. One added advantage to using a recirculating pump with this unit is that it allows my family to use a smaller flow of hot water without the heater shutting off because the recirculating pump is boosting the water flow through the heater unit. All in all, this tankless heater was a perfect choice for my family's needs, supplying ample flow for a household of 3 to 4 persons.

Our family has wanted a tankless water heater for a while and after discussing our needs with the Home Depot-recommended installer/plumber, we decided to purchase this model, and after using it for nearly two months, we couldn't be happier. Other than not running out of hot water, the feature I like most is the ability to change the water temperature with the indoor wired remote control.

The Rheem has the capacity for larger demands. I wanted the inside model but couldn't justify the $40 a foot heavy stainless vent tube. I used the outside model in an ally way, right next to the bathroom. The install manual was very clear. The water and gas pipes needed to be 3/4". My 3/4" hot water line T'd into two different 1/2" lines, one to the shower, the other to the kitchen. I added the service valves to this unit to facilitate the yearly cleaning. I plugged it in and when the hot water was run, the unit clicked on and ran quietly. Warm air came out the vent, similar to a hair dryer. The control was set to 120 degrees, which felt too hot. I lowered it to 116 and the shower seems nice at the mid setting. I think this is a good machine. I will flush it out each year. I'm pleased to see that I'm not using any gas to maintain a tank of hot water. And, being right next to the shower, the water gets hot quick. A savings of water.
