Product Details

Rust-Oleum 1 gal. Concrete Etch and Cleaner is a cleaner and etch combination that opens the pores of concrete surfaces to allow coatings to penetrate and achieve a proper bond. A true alternative to muriatic acid, it creates the same profile but without the dangerous chemicals, harsh odors and need to neutralize after etching. Simply flush with clean water, allow concrete to dry and apply coatings.
  • Prepares unsealed concrete floor surfaces for concrete coatings and stain
  • Covers up to 500 sq. ft. per gal.
  • Creates superior adhesion of coatings for a longer life
  • Additional cleaning properties ensure oil and grease spots are removed prior to coating
  • Use on bare concrete: garage floors, basements, driveways, carports, patios, walkway and pool decks to create a concrete profile prior to coating
  • Universal, for use with all concrete coatings, including EpoxyShield and RockSolid
  • Removes efflorescence and residue that could impact adhesion
  • Formula free of odors, dangerous chemicals and does not need neutralizing after application
  • Will not harm grass or plants
  • Rinse 3 times with water after application using a stiff bristle brush
  • Do not apply to previously sealed, painted or stained concrete
  • See label for complete instructions

Q:How do you address the white residue in the areas of the pour? When applied to the concrete, it would only fizz when it made contact. Not much fizzing after that. How do I get rid of the the discoloration it left behind?

Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help. Slowly add one gallon (full container) of Rust-Oleum Clean & Etch to one gallon of water in a plastic watering can (2 gallons total). Working in a 10x10 foot section of the floor, pour the mixed etching solution out evenly over the surface. Scrub the solution around with a stiff bristle broom. The etching solution will begin to fizz for a few seconds while being scrubbed. When the fizzing stops, rinse off the solution with clean water and move to the next section. The solution should not be allowed to dry on the surface. Mist water on the surface as necessary to keep the surface wet until ready to rinse. When all sections are completed, rinse 3 times with clean water and scrub with a stiff bristle broom while rinsing. This will ensure that no solution remains on the surface. A squeegee will aid in the removal of excess water. If the solution was allowed to dry on the surface, rinse with water and scrub with a stiff bristle broom, then rinse three times. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Q:I have new concrete poured about 6 weeks ago. I know I can now can use stain. Do I need to etching solution since it is totally clean? I was planning to do a light power wash before staining.

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to clear things up, Simon! Rust-Oleum Concrete Etch and Cleaner can be used to help prep bare concrete prior to coating, painting or staining. Etching helps open the pores of the concrete to ensure proper penetration of the stain. Newer concrete still typically needs to be etched, and etching is typically required on concrete that will receive vehicle traffic. However, you will want to check with the stain manufacture for their prep recommendations. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Does a new skim coat of concrete need to be etched
      by|Nov 30, 2022
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for reaching out, Greg. New concrete must be allowed to cure for 28 days before it can be painting. Before apply any Rust-Oleum concrete paint, the concrete (including skim coat) needs to be etched. Rust-Oleum Clean & Etch for Concrete is an excellent choice to both clean and etch concrete. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

        Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Elaine! The Rust-Oleum Concrete & Etch for Concrete is not designed to remove rust stains. We recommend using a rust stain remover specifically designed for use on concrete surfaces to ensure compatibility. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

That is odd to hear! Our Rust-Oleum Clean & Etch for Concrete does not contain any ingredient that can change the color of concrete surfaces, however, remnants of the cleaner may discolor the surface slightly if not fully rinsed away. We recommend rinsing the surface again thoroughly, using a pressure nozzle on a hose if possible to ensure all remnants of the cleaner are removed. Once the cleaner has been removed, the concrete should no longer foam when rinsed. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

That's odd, Frank! Rust-Oleum Concrete Clean and Etch is intended for use on bare, unsealed and uncoated concrete surfaces. This product must also be thoroughly rinsed from the surface after application. The solution should not dry on the surface. It is also key that the whole container is mixed with one gallon of water.

Purchased product to prepare garage floor for painting. Cleaner floor twice and allowed floor to dry for 3 days before painting. Used same brand of garage floor paint. Allowed paint to cure for a week before parking on it and it still lifted. Waste of $250 in paint and supplies.

That's not what we expect to hear! Please keep in mind, Rust-Oleum Concrete Etch and Cleaner also needs to be used with a degreaser product to help prep bare concrete. You also want to ensure that a splash test is preformed to test for a sealer on the surface. If a sealer is present, it will need to be ginded off prior to coating.

Let's see what we can figure out! Rust-Oleum Clean & Etch For Concrete is an etching solution used to clean and degrease bare concrete surfaces to improve penetration and adhesion of coatings, paints, stains and sealants. When the diluted solution is applied to bare concrete and agitated with a stiff bristle broom, it will begin to fizz. This fizzing will only on bare concrete, if there is no fizzing that indicates the concrete is sealed.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! Keep in mind that Rust-Oleum Concrete Clean and Etch is designed to clean and degrease concrete driveways to improve penetration and adhesion of coatings, paints, stains, and sealants. For any oil spills or deep stains, we recommend using Rust-Oleum Cleaner & Degreaser for Concrete.

            Very good
Finally got tired of waiting for the correct temps and humidity per instruction and just had a few hours where it was correct weather. Had used the Cleaner and Degreaser on my 20 year old floor the day before and looked pretty great, now time fot the clean & etch so I can finish with the lacquer I wanted to finish with. Got it mixed half product and half water then apply to floor let it sit and foam, moved around with a scrub brush then let it sit till foaming gone then I did it again to make sure got as good as I could, Wash down the floor with water like 4 times. Now is time to let dry. Had a electrical job to do so went and did that. Next will be the Lacquer. When dry was looking pretty good
