Questions & Answers

Q:Hello. I used the flat black system on my bathroom tile floor. It looked fantastic but I noticed an area where I could see some cloudy/white streaks. Thinking I missed an area I did a second top coat. It looked worse. How do I fix this?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Monica, thank you for reaching out! This may be hazing or blushing from the application of the clear top coat, and typically is due to the clear being applied a bit too heavily on a section. Wiping this spot with denatured alcohol can sometimes wick the moisture out and clear up the hazy clear coating. If that does not solve the issue, lightly sand to remove the clear in this area, then recoat with a light application of the top coat. Please give us a call at 888-683-5667 if you have any question, we will be happy to help! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Q:I want to use this on the concrete floors in my basement which are currently unsealed. I want to apply a waterproofing to them first since this product is not a concrete waterproofing product. Should I seal the concrete first before using this product?

      Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! If wanting to waterproof the floor, you would want to apply the waterproofing coating before the Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating System. Make sure the waterproofing product is suitable for use on floors and considered a paintable product. This system can be used over a sealed floor, provided it is not a superhydrophobic sealer. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

        Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Scott! If wanting a darker color, we recommend using the Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating Kit in the Deep Tint Base instead. The photo of the kitchen floor painted a solid color can vary depending on which color section you have chosen. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experinece, Tamera. If needed, the Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating System can be cleaned with most cleaners once it has cured. We recommend avoiding abrasive or harsh cleaning methods.

I think this is a good product overall, but the instructions are not accurate in terms of number of coats. It says they recommend one coat for tinted and two coats for white, I needed at least three coats of white and for using the color needed two with additional touch up. If you were considered designs like checkerboard or stenciling, I would say plan to spend a ton of time or if you want it to be perfect just do a solid color. Overall, I feel good about my results as a temporary move for replacing my bathroom floor in a few years. I think this will hold up okay too.

We appreciate you reaching out and sharing your experinece, Jamie! The coverage rate of Rust-Oleum Home Floor Base Coating will be dependent on the material that is being coated, application method, and if you are coating over a contrasting color.

          Overall satisfied
If you are ballin' on a budget/have ugly floors, this is a product for you. 1st I cleaned our tile with Krud Kutter, mopped with bleach/dish soap and let the floors dry. You want to make sure there are ZERO crumbs, hair, fuzz, lint, etc. on the floor before each coat of paint or you're going to have junk stuck in the paint. I used Steam Gray (cold super light gray) as the base coat (2 coats) and stenciled on Coastal Fog (warm light-medium gray) then finished with the top coat in matte finish.

            Ruins Mexican Tile Floors
Do not paint your Mexican tile floors with white Rust-Oleum floor Base coating it is meant to be permanent and extremely difficult to remove and restore your terracotta Mexican tile floor to it's original terracotta beauty. This Rust-Oleum HOME® Base Coat White Paint product will potentially ruin your Mexican tile floor.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experinece, Bill. The Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating System is not intended to be a temporary coating and is intended to last for years to come. With any coating, it can be removed by either sanding/scraping or by using a paint stripper. With any removal method, a test application is always recommended to ensure favorable results.

              Looks amazing!
I bought this to cover up blue tile in my kids bathroom. I didn’t have high expectations from some of the reviews I’ve seen. I ordered the matte black color and I absolutely love it! I did have to apply 2 coats to cover the blue entirely. It doesn’t have a strong order at all and did not leave any brush strokes.

                  Do not buy
Worse product ever, waist of $36 dollars and now I will have to replace my floor. I bought this product to add shine to a vinyl floor. I did exactly as the direction said primed it and cleaned it make sure there was no residue on the floor. As I applied it, I let it dry, and when I went to look at it I could easily tell it was not sticking. The product easily pilled up, did not stick at all. As it pulled up it also pulled up the top of the vinyl. Simply a mess.

Thank you for reaching out, Mary! The Rust-Oleum Home Top Coat must be applied over the Home Base Coat to ensure proper performance and adhesion. This product is not designed to be used over primers or other paints.

                    Horrible Coverage
Surface was cleaned and primed prior to application. Used the recommended roller and 3/8 nap roller. The coverage is spotty, streaky, and awful. It will absolutely need two coats and we will have to purchase another can. It states that two coats aren’t recommended. I wish we had just used regular paint for the stairs! It is thick and goopy, but applies watery and streaky. Very unhappy. We are not novice painters, and have painted just about every other surface on the house with no issue.

Very good coverage and easy to apply. Used approximately 1.5 qt per 15x15 room, so make sure you get more than you think you’ll need based on label. Top coat applies easily also and makes the floor beautiful! I have semi gloss on mine. Top coat is CRITICAL and needs to be applied asap! Floor paint dries to a very “sticky” finish and once top coat dries it feels hard and smooth. Amazed how great the floors turned out. (They had been previously painted, so I cleaned by sweeping/vacuuming and followed with damp mopping with a “crud cutting” solution to remove remaining dirt and grime. Highly recommend this product. Happy I didn’t have to sand or prime before painting!!!
