A:  Hello Matt, thanks for your interest in Rutland Castable Refractory Cement. From our Chemist: As long as the OSB is secure/stable, I would recommend somewhere between 1.5 - 3”. This product can withstand a lot of mechanic force/abrasion. It is strongest after 14 days of curing. If you need further support, you can call us at 1-800-544-1307 Mon-Fri. Q:Whats the best forming material when making a replacement refractory panel
        by|Feb 15, 2023

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Tim, thanks for your interest in Rutland Castable Refractory Cement. Castable Refractory Cement is the best forming material when making a replacement refractory panel. Casting: The form or mold must be waterproof to prevent absorption of water from the mixture, as water is needed for the hardening process. Apply release agent, such as cooking spray, to the form or mold. Pour mixture into the mold and smooth by patting thoroughly to remove air pockets, but do not smooth to a slick finish as this prevents water from escaping. Setting and Firing: Let set at 60°F or above for 24 hours. Do not permit surface to dry out during this period. Dried castable cement still contains chemically combined water that is given off as steam at higher temperatures. Therefore, heat slowly when first starting fire. Thank you. The product showed up with the container opened and the cement in the bottom of the box outside of the box and then everywhere. Very disappointing. Have yet to hear from Home Depot on the issue after sending an electronic note. Very Disapointed and have not used yet!!!

Worked in my mini foundry just fine. I should have let it set longer before I fired the foundry, but that's me, not the product. Have used a digital thermometer to measure outside temps and they're well within expectations.

The product met all of my expectations, and the directions were easy to follow. Using this cement as the base of my forge which has an inside dimension of 18" X 18" X 3" with a 1" layer of k-wool at the bottom. Just two tubs of the 25 lbs. of the castable refractory cement was enough to fill it too the top with a little extra to spare, and as far as looks and performance goes, it works like a champ.

I found the substance to be liquidity based on their measurements at first. I found that the dry mixture was not mixed well enough. When I mixed the dry mixture in the bucket prior to weighing, it turned out to be the right consistency. The instructions need to say mix prior to use if you are not using the entire bucket.

Used this to repair a broken BGE fire box. Worked great. Trick is to use low heat to cure after air dry. Too high heat will cause joint to separate.
