What joint compound should I use for my first coat? I've read that mesh tape is prone to cracking if you don't use a setting compound, like easy sand 90. Is that true?
Asked by: Chad
Yes, but if your structure is under changing forces (resettling/seasonal), you'll have cracks. Paper is a better option in this case

Why does the tape show through after I sand each coat of joint compound?

I have applied 2 coats of joint compound sanding after each coat when it is dry. The tape shows through after I sand.
Asked by: Arty
The manufacturer cautions against using any "lightweight" joint compound for the first coat and states that, other than that prohibition, any taping or setting compound is fine to use with its FIBA mesh tape.
