Questions & Answers

The fuel that was in the gas can had a pink residue that fell to the bottom when we put it in a glass.

Answer This Question

Hello Cheri. Some fuels have a pink tint due to added dyes, and most fuels will leave a residue under certain conditions. The composition of the fuel and how it evaporates or degrades determines the nature and extent of the residue. Hope this information helps.

How do you attach "spout to the tank?

          Answer This Question

Hi Molly - We apologize for your experience. Customer satisfaction is very important to Scepter. Similar to medication packaging, gas/diesel cans must also adhere to strict child resistance packaging laws. All fuel containers sold in the United States must come equipped with a child-safety lock and adhere to environmental regulations (EPA). This product should only be used with the spout it came with at the time of purchase. Screw on the black cap of the spout to the neck of the can and press down on the green tab to tighten or loosen it. Every automobile/equipment is different, so it is not a one size fits all situation. The SMARTCONTROL gas can, is designed to be used with your palm. Step 1: Vent the fuel can by slowly unscrewing the cap, allow all the pressure to escape. Once vented re-tighten cap. You may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 2: Flip up dark lever on back of spout with your palm. Step 3: With the dark green lever still flipped up, push the entire light green pad forward. It will be stiff as that is part of the child resistant feature. Again, you may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 4: Tilt can and pour. The spout has a channel for venting when pouring. The “screen” you see in the neck of the fuel can is actually a safety device called a flame mitigation device (FMD). Its inclusion in fuel containers is part of a 2020 U.S. law to improve overall safety. It does not make it safe to mix Gas and Fire, which remains extremely dangerous, but helps to protect the consumer against situations of potential misuse. Do not ever remove or modify the FMD. We understand that filling the containers now requires the user to learn to rest the pump in the center of the FMD, on the steps, to fill at full speed. You can also choose simply to take your time filling the container. We have posted both fill and pour instructions online at https://www.scepter.com/safety/instructional-videos/ which should help. Please contact our Customer Service team at 1-800-387-6018 or email customerservice@scepter.com if we can be of any further assistance. We are here to help!

Can you store the gasoline can in an enclosed 6x8 shed with no windows? It?s locked at all the times. I also heard if the gas can is full that it?s safer than when it?s almost empty to store? Is that true? Thank you

                  Answer This Question

Alexandra - Customer satisfaction is very important to Scepter. It is safe to store your gas can either full or half full as long as the gas can had not been modified and is secured in an upright position. Please ensure that you tighten the cap fully outside of the shed first before storing it. This product should only be used with the spout it came with at the time of purchase. There are environmental regulations (EPA) that must be met on all fuel cans sold in the US. These cans are certified by EPA and CARB and sealed for emissions. When it is hot in the summer you can expect the fuel can to balloon a bit as the gases force the can to expand and when the temperature drops the fuel can may contract and the sides pull in a bit. We do recommend regular venting, particularly before each use. Please contact our Customer Care team at 1-800-387-6018 or email customerservice@scepter.com if we can be of any further assistance. We are here to help!

The problem I found with this is the sealing around the cap. It leaks gas when filling, very dangerous. It has an O-Ring but the design is poor. I have some ideas on how to fix mine since I have an engineering background, but would not recommend, and the manufacturer should recall these.

Absurd and ridiculous design for a gas can. Could not get pour spout to pour, all it did was leak all over the place before falling apart in several pieces.

                      Junk fire hazard
Bought two cans. Both leak. Got 10 gallons and tipped can to pour and they leak at the can seal. The seal design is trash. If spoiling gas at a gas station is punishable, then this can should be recalled and illegal. Or just buy it and then take scepter to court after your garage burns down. Or you can take off the green locking ring like this and get it to seal. But then you modified the van and it’s your problem now if things go wrong ever.

                        Poor design
This is one of the more USELESS innovations I've run across recently...or any time, for that matter. It's not user-friendly because you need 3 hands to operate it. Also, it leaks, no matter how you tighten, or adjust the nozzle. Pretty worthless. My fix-it? Just take the nozzle off, and use a standard funnel. Would NOT recommend! If it were possible to give it a less than one-star rating, I most certainly would!

Improperly trimmed green lock ring causes leaks.
Improperly trimmed green plastic lock ring prevents the nozzle from seating properly and causes leaking around the base of the nozzle. This is a quality assurance problem and a serious safety hazard. The fix is simple enough. And not all cans will have this problem. You should return the can if it has this problem. But it is possible to fix in the field if you are confident in your capabilities.

Hi RSailor - Customer satisfaction is very important to Scepter. We apologize for your experience. The green tabs on the child lock ring beneath the unlocking tab are designed there so that it makes it easier for the consumer to unlock the child lock. These tabs make the unlocking tab easier to flex with the thumb/finger in order to disengage the child lock and easily open the container for the standard adult. We STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST using this can with any modifications. Please contact our Customer Service team at 1-800-387-6018 or email customerservice@scepter.com so that we can resolve this for you. Hello - The screen (strainer) you describe is a flame mitigation device (FMD) for consumer protection. Their inclusion in fuel containers is about to become law. Unfortunately there are people who misuse fuel and can end up severely injured. Our goal is the safety of our customers, so we’ve added one ahead of the pending regulations. We understand that filling the containers can take a bit longer, but this does add an extra layer of protection for consumers who don’t handle fuel responsibly. The FMD should NEVER be removed from the container and if it is removed we recommend that the container be disposed of. Gas and diesel pumps are different. The FMD contains two internal ledges that the pump must rest on when filling depending on your fuel type. Diesel pumps rest on the first ledge, and gasoline pumps must be inserted to reach the second ledge. We have posted both fill and pour instructions online at www.scepter.com/starthere/ which should help. If you require any additional troubleshooting, please contact our customer care team at 1-855-857-3252 Scepter

                                Leaks A LOT!
I was really impressed with how much these fuel cans leaked. I opened them up to find wadded up rubber gaskets on three of the 4 I bought and no gasket on the 4th. Shouldn’t have to replace parts on some new, and so simple as a fuel can. I wouldn’t buy these again or recommend them unless it’s your ONLY option.

                                  Just ok.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Living in a farm, we always need gas and gas containers of various sizes and especially 5 gallon. Whereas this one definitely fits the bill I found the nozzle faulty in design. You have to use both hands to release the gas and fill while keeping stabilized. It was a but more difficult to use for me. Hubby wasn't impressed either. I'm not sure I'd recommend.
