Are these post base compatible with green treat posts?

Asked by Linda March 25, 2021

Answer

The ABU66Z has the Z-MAX finish which provides a medium level of corrosion protection and can be used with treated wood in many applications. Please see the Corrosion information at the following link to determine the recommend finish based on the treated wood being used and the environment where it is being installed: https://www.strongtie.com/solutions/corrosion. Thank you!

Have you installed ABU66Z with a square washer that was supplied with the base and round washer that was supplied with Grip-Rite anchor bolt? If so, that may be the problem. Do not use the round washer - just the square thick washer and nut. Regards.

Is the post supported at the top? If so, the post base is probably adequate. If the post is free standing, definitely not.

How do you anchor this brace in concrete

Asked by Jeff May 3, 2020

Answer

The ABU66Z anchors to the concrete with a 5/8" diameter anchor; it is up to the Designer/Engineer of Record to specify the anchor bolt type, length and embedment. There isn't enough information provided, but please feel free to call our Engineering Support Department (800-999-5099) with further details and while we cannot specify, they can direct you to anchorage options. Thank you!

Yes, these are designed for use w/ 1/2" anchor bolts. Be very precise on how much bolt protrudes so you don't have to trim them - thickness of bracket, washer, lock washer, nut & a thread or two. Built a cabin resting on 6x6's notched to hold double 2x6 carrying beams. Rock solid!

The instructions say to use 16d (3.5" nails) but the post is a 6x6, so its only 5.5" wide. Wont t...

I didn't use nails, I used 1/2 inch bolts, 13 thread and nuts. I drilled through those two holes in the Simpson Strong-Tie (1/2 inch) and secured it with two bolts.

The description says 12 gauge and the specifications say 10 gauge. Which is it?

Actually both...the base portion of the ABU66Z is 12 gauge and the strap portion is 10 gauge. Thank you!

Yes would be my answer... I drilled a hole with a hammer drill, put in some cement specific epoxy in the hole, dropped a stainless steel bolt in, and allowed to cure. Waited for the following weekend to put up a huge pergola, and it’s been solid ever since... I hope that helps

The ABU66Z has not been evaluated with the Outdoor Accents washer and screw. We can only support the installation of the ABU66Z with the specified fasteners (a quantity of 12 - 16d common nails OR 2 - 1/2" diameter machine bolts to the post; 5/8" diameter anchor to the concrete). Thank you!

Product very study and came well packaged. Only complaint is the width of the standoff was closer to 5.75 inches versus 6.00 inches. Ended up shaving off about 1/4 inch to make it fit with my post. Used the recommended heat treated nails to attach to the post, and added in a couple Simpson Strong support braces for the two open sides. Worked well, just wish the dimensions were truly 6 x 6.

This is a heavy-duty post anchor that allows you to use 1/2-in bolts or lag screws to secure the timber you're mounting. the base plate covers the 5/8" anchor bolt and heavy-duty washer (the washer is included) used to secure the base and keeps the post off of the ground. If the base is level, the base plate allows the post to automatically level with minimal effort. Very high quality.
