Q:How long must I wait for concrete poured into a Sonotube to dry or cure before drilling hole for ABU mounting plate?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi MKDIY, thank you for your question. We want to make sure we address your question. Concrete cure time is based on the concrete manufacturer's specified cure times. If you are not sure who the concrete manufacturer is, it is a good rule of thumb to wait at least 21 days for full cure. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. - Stacy

Q:Can this bracket be used for a 4x4 fence post
      by|Nov 10, 2023

      Answer This Question

A:  Hey Jeff, this is Ricardo from Simpson Strong-Tie. This base is designed for nominal 4x4 lumber and can be used for many applications including fence posts. Because these bases do not provide any lateral resistance I would be cautious on the height of the post. When you have a taller post that is unsupported at the top, it will put additional lateral and rotational stresses on the base. You can also possibly look at our RPBZ (Retrofit Post Base) and CPS (Composite Plastic Standoff) as an alternative. If you would like to discuss further, please contact us at 800-999-5099. Have a great day.

Bottom material is thick -- not much room for nut
The manufacturers do not make it clear how much bolt to leave extended for this bracket. However, the ribbed bottom (why???) in combination with the extra-thick rectangular washer plate comes to almost 1/2 inch of thickness (see picture), leaving barely over 1/2 inch for a standard 5/8" galvanized nut to be fully threaded. I guess I was supposed to leave >1" of J-Bolt above the concrete surface, fasten the base with the nut and then grind the remaining bolt off to fit on the top plate? :(

          Response from Simpson Strong-TieMay 15, 2023
Hi Alan, thank you for your message. We want to make sure we address your question regarding ABU66 installation. The bottom of the ABU66 has embossments on the bottom to increase the strength of the base. The washer that comes with the base is .173" thick and the embossments are .125" which leaves .7" of space to get the nut on. A 5/8" standard hex nut is 5/8" thick and will fit in this vertical space. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you. -Stacy SimpsonStrongTie

The Simpson strong tie post base was ideal for nominal 6x6 treated posts. However it was difficult to find 5/8 inch J anchor bolts, so I ended up using standard 5/8 x 10 inch galvanized bolts as anchors in the concrete foundation. HomeDepot should really carry the 5/8 inch J anchor bolts.

The product is heavy duty. The metal was thick enough that I was able to weld them in order to mount them vertical which was needed for my application.

Absolutely awesome product for joining post to concrete. I bought 11 of these, and the rigidity of the post after securing, nailing, and thru-bolts is amazing. Like the 1” offset that will help protect the post from water damage.

Product very study and came well packaged. Only complaint is the width of the standoff was closer to 5.75 inches versus 6.00 inches. Ended up shaving off about 1/4 inch to make it fit with my post. Used the recommended heat treated nails to attach to the post, and added in a couple Simpson Strong support braces for the two open sides. Worked well, just wish the dimensions were truly 6 x 6.

                Easy Installation!
I LOVE using anything i can from simpson strong tie. Everything seems so heavy duty. I used two of these 4x4 post stands to build me a mailbox. Kinda pricey but you get what you pay for!
