Product Details

The LU is designed for joist-to-header installation in wood-framed construction. This face-mount hanger features speed prongs to temporarily position and secure the connector for easier and faster installation. The economical LU hanger is value engineered for strength.

Q:Can I use an LU joist hanger for 2x 10 pt joists hung on a 2 x 8 ledger board?

A:  Hello Pete, I am Colin with Simpson Strong-Tie. The LU210 hanger cannot be used to support a 2x10 pt joist hung on a 2x8 ledger board for many reasons. The LU210 hanger is intended for an interior dry environment and not contact with pressure treated chemicals. It is not offered with the premium Zmax finish. The LU210 measures 7-13/16" tall. A nominal 2x8 is 7-1/4" tall. Most face mount hangers must fully engage with the ledger/header. A great tool on our website is Hanger Selector. Go to strongtie.com, enter Hanger Selector in the Search Strongtie.com field, and open the HS web app. Enter your information to identify load rated hanger solutions and required fasteners.     Q:If I use the recommended 3-1/2 inch nails in the header, roughly 2 inches will stick out the other side of the truss in my post frame building. Can I use 1-1/2 screws or nails instead? I am installing a ceiling with 2x4 every 24inches and 5/8 OSB.

    A:  Hi Cole, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. Yes, the LU24 may be installed with our Strong Drive Connector Screw (SD) #9 x 1 1/2". Item # is SD9112. Same fastener for both the face fasteners and the joist fasteners. You will meet or exceed the connector capacity installed with nails.       Q:I have 2x6 joist on my porch/deck and want to add joist hangers on them. When the contractor built it many many years ago they didn?t use joist hangers and since then a few nails have rotted away. So are the 2X6 joist hangers the correct ones to use.

          Use as a stand alone support or in addition to butt nailing floor joisting for a solid connection. For best results, use #9 x 1-1/4" joist hanger nails. My floor structure is solid & hopefully not squeaking.

          Great old school hanger
          This hanger is what we used prior to the introduction of Z-MAX hangers. This style does not have 'bubble' holes for double shear nailing and I've seen these develop unsightly surface rust when used in areas exposed to extreme weather, but they're satisfactory in most cases. I only use this style hanger in protected areas such as exposed rafters under a porch roof and interior applications where double shear nailing isn't required by building code. Use proper strength 1-1/2 inch nails or screws into joists or rafters and follow all applicable local building codes.

          These Simpson strong-ties work excellent, I needed 350 but only 244 were in stock system wide. I have used these several times and would highly recommend them! If I can get them again they are on my wish list with Home-Depot hoping I can finish my project. Using joist hangers allows for expansion and contraction of the wood and is so much easier and stronger than toe nailing you will not go wrong using this product in my opinion.
