Could this be used to support a gate post?

Asked by Mike October 25, 2020

Answer

I'm on the fence as to whether that would be a good idea. Sorry for the pun, but truly not convinced either way. My main question would be WHY? And the only reason for it i can find is that the location somehow doesn't allow digging down far enough (usually 3') for an 8' post to set properly. I have these as part of the foundation for 10-12' posts as part of a large pergola. However they don't hold it upright per se as there is significant crossbracing in the structure. My final answer if it were me is: If you simply can't dig down the 3', give it a try and let us know how it holds up, but otherwise a post hole digger is just too easy in anything other than rocky or hard clay soil to get the 3' depth, and then you avoid the extra effort and expense of this, and the concrete to set it in. Good luck.

Can you use this with a 8 x 8

No, They are only 5.5 to 5.75 inches wide.

What depth of concrete is required for the product to be fully secured?

While the base must be set in 3.5” of concrete, steel place in concrete in the ground should have at least 3” of concrete around it. That means the concrete should be at least 7” thick.

Is this ok to use with treated posts?

That should be fine. I live in the desert so I did not need treated wood.

What diameter size concrete forming tube should be use for these?

Asked by Tom June 10, 2017

Answers

The 6x6 square has a diagonal of 8.5”. To achieve the 2” minimum cover (2”+8.5”+2”), the tube would need to be greater than 12.5” in diameter. It could physically fit inside a 10” tube, but without the minimum cover at the corners, the concrete will be prone to crack at the corners. Tubes larger than 12” are rare. You’re probably better off building a 12”x12” box for the concrete form. The footing dimensions are also determined by the area and loads being supported by the post, as well as the type of soil and ability to support/distribute the loads.

The PBS46 isn't offered in Z-MAX; it is available with the HDG (hot dip galvanized) finish which provides the same level of corrosion protection as Z-MAX (medium), but it is by special order. Thank you!

These are the perfect anchor for building sheds, garages, cabins or decks on cement pylons. I used these on 12" x4 ft. Cement pylons to level my 24' x 24' cabin after the portion of the pressure treated legs that were under ground started to rot away and cabin started to sag. These brackets worked perfect. They worked so good, I did the whole cabin. Very strong and well made.

This product was great. I placed them in 8" piers and then attached two 16' 6x6 "rough" cut skids. That is the only reason for the 4 vs 5 stars as these are not "really" 6" wide, but more like 5 & 1/2 inches wide. No big issue as I just shaved out some width and fit them in. If you are using finished wood they will fit perfect.
