Questions & Answers

Is this wire safe for a temperoary 50ft overhead 200 services

Asked by: Tripop01
The NEC does not allow single rated USE as aerial cable. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

Can this wire be used to connect meter base to 125 amp load panel? The two are connected with 1 foot of conduit.

Asked by: Tw1000
This depends on more conditions. Under regular conditions this wire is rated for 100amps (Table 310.15(B)(16)). If this is a feeder to for the entire load of a single dwelling then this wire is rated for 120amps (310.15(B)(7) and you can then legally use the next larger breaker which is 125amps. So if this goes to an outbuilding or a subpanel within your house then it is not legal but if it feeds and entire house or dwelling unit of a multi dwelling residence then it is legal. I am not a code expert so I would just go for 2/0 which is good for 135. With such a short run it really won't cost much more.

Can I use this to run a 50ft service to a 100amp breaker box ? What is the amp rating for thise wire in that distance?

Asked by: Tweeter92
Yes 1/0 aluminum is rated for 100 amps as long as the breaker in the panel that feeds the load is not larger than 100amps. This assumes you are not running this wire though a hot location such as on top the roof and there are not more than 3 of these wires grouped together in this run (a ground wire doesn't count as part of the group)

What is the service amp rating for underground bury on a 300 ft. service run?

I have a 300 ft overhead electric service run to my home. It is a 100 amp service now. Can this wire be used to replace it underground either direct burry or in PVC. Is this size also capable of running a 200 amp upgrade?
Asked by: Ralph
: Yes – you can use this product for a 100A underground direct-burial service installation. However 300’ is a long distance to run service entrance cable and voltage drop will be a concern. It would be better to upsize to at least a 2/0 AWG conductor. No – this size will be much too small for a 200A installation (especially considering the voltage drop over the long cable run).
