Answer This Question
A:Â I have spoken to Stanley, and explained that plastic is not a good load-bearing material. They are aware that the plastic connector breaks occasionally, since there are numerous similar reviews, and they continue to use plastic in their designs year after year. I recommend avoiding ANY such knife which uses plastic parts in this manner as it is not only a poor design, but a health hazard, since the full length of the blade becomes bare when the connector snaps. I also recommend returning the unit to Home Depot for a refund or credit towards a higher quality knife, rather than attempting to deal with Stanley directly. This is the best way for Home Depot to understand the serious nature of the issue and consider removing such items from inventory.

Excellent
Man, it is an excellent cutter, good grip, strong, and the locking mechanism works. Also, you can have small blade increments, tailoring for your specific needs. The best cutter i’ve ever had

Stronger and safer than an 18 mm snap-off
This product is fairly expensive, but definitely worth it. It is my go-to cutting knife for difficult cutting jobs. The screw up blade clamp holds the blade rigid. I feel safe knowing the blade will not slip during rugged cutting jobs. The larger handle gives increased grip, so more force can be applied. Easier to use than an 18mm snap-off. Use almost every week.

This product is appropriately named -- Snap-Off Utility Knife, being as that is exactly what is likely to happen to parts of this tool within a short period of time unless used for very light-weight applications. Though the majority of the tool is made of metal and rugged rubber, the part which holds the blade in the tool is made of plastic. Each time you use this tool to cut something such as cardboard, this plastic piece gets pulled on with a considerable amount of force. The amount of force subjected increases according to the thickness or density of the material being cut. Stanley knows that this piece breaks frequently, and they continue using plastic for this piece in many designs. I strongly recommend that you examine the product or photos of the product closely. Plastic is not a good load-bearing material. If you see a piece of plastic connecting the blade to the slide, AVOID PURCHASING THE PRODUCT!
Stanley has as limited lifetime warranty. They will require you to pay postage to send the entire defective unit back to them (not just the faulty, poorly designed part), then they will decide whether or not to send you a replacement. Do you want to pay MORE? You MAY be able to talk them into sending you a replacement if you chat with them on their site, but why waste the time? AVOID PURCHASING THE PRODUCT!
