Product Overview

Powerful output, compact design, remarkable energy-saving features. Our whole house electric tankless water heaters perform with the highest standards for comfort and reliability. Tempra Plus models feature Advanced Flow Control, patented in Germany and exclusive to Stiebel Eltron tankless heaters. If hot water demand exceeds working capacity, Advanced Flow Control automatically maintains consistent temperatures by slightly reducing flow. Intelligent self-modulating technology continually ensures the least amount of energy is used to heat the water. A Tempra 20 Plus provides hot water at a consistent temperature for 1-2 bathrooms in warm climates, or 1 bathroom in cool climates. See sizing to determine which model is best for you. Stiebel Eltron invented tankless electric water heating technology more than 90 years ago, and is still the industry pioneer and world leader. Our engineering and manufacturing tradition of excellence means you can depend on the performance and reliability of our products.

I would recommend a larger unit--Stiebel Eltron can recommend which one works best for your home (including multi-unit/point-of-service options) but I think they'll agree that unless you're a single person dwelling where only one of those would be used at a time you'd get low flow of hot water from this model. One of the other complaints I've seen from instantaneous water heater customers is from those with homes with long pipe runs where a traditional tank heater with recirculating pump may provide a greater level of comfort--and the impression of "instant" hot water. Your clothes washer is probably less of a concern as most supply hoses restrict flow to about 1.5-3 GPM and few washers use 100% hot water in wash cycles; however you'd get a lower flow if trying to fill your washer and take a shower. Keep in-mind what the capacity for your house's electric circuits are--an instantaneous water heater will likely be the highest draw single item in your home and anything larger than this model is best served by a 200A service--especially if it shares a service panel with an electric stove or heat. Many electricians will come out and take a look for a fee and credit that towards any upgrades needed to your wiring--it's worth the peace of mind/safety to have an electrician out to give you their opinion. I'm having this model installed in a 650 sq ft condo in Minnesota (44 deg cold water) and it will be just adequate for a single bathroom (sink, low-flow shower), kitchen faucet, and dishwasher that uses hot water--not all being run at once. These electric instant water heaters are more popular in Europe and Asia where houses are a more modest size and natural gas isn't as cheap as in the US. Typically European homes have shorter pipe runs (bathrooms, laundry, and kitchen adjacent) whereas homes in the US occasionally have laundry and bathrooms in remote areas of the home, necessitating long pipe runs that leak heat from heated water sitting in pipes.

How many 40 amp breakers does this product use

This does not use 40 amp breakers it uses 50 amp breakers... and this model uses 3 of them. but the biggest issue is if you will have enough room in your fuse box and is your total amps are enough. Remember there are 200 amp boxes, 300 amp boxes and up. My house has two 200 amp boxes so I was able to put two 50 amps in one and the other 50 amp in the the next box. You also need 6 gauge wire for this one and you need to know how to run wire in your house.

I will be ruining 1.5-2.2 gph 24-7 365 a year. Will this unit handle that?

First, your question might need to be rewritten or reworded.. but if you are asking if this thing can run 24/7 365 days supplying 1.5 to 2.2 GPH. Then technically no it can not. It needs a minimum flow rate of .5gpm for the thing to even register water moment and turn on. 1.5 GPH is .025 GPM and 2.2 GPH is .037 GPM. way below the minimum flow rate for this tankless water heater to work. You need a min of 30 GPH for this to work for what you want. There is another one on here that works at a min of .25 GPM or 15 GPH. But this tankless will not work with that small a flow rate... you are better off with the tank heater. Now if you need 30 GPH for 24/7 365 a year then yes it will work.. your bill might be higher but it will work fine so long as you keep changing the filter constantly and flush it regularly.

No. There is no ON / OFF button on the unit. It only draws its power when the water is running through it. When you are not running water, only the display screen is on.

The only difference is the "Plus" version has an Advanced Flow Controller. This feature will control the flow of water to ensure you always have hot water at the temperature you set the thermostat at. Basically it will not allow you to ask too much water from it and go cold. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact the Technical Service Department at 1-800-582-8423 ext 6. Answer

The Tempra 36 Plus is the most powerful KW we make. Depending on your location and incoming water temperature, this unit will have the most output in GPM. It would be your best option to fill the tub the quickest. Please feel free to call our Technical Support Department at 1-800-582-8423 ext 6 with any questions. Thank you!

Is this unit sufficient for one bathroom plus kitchen sink for one person

Asked by Klariza February 10, 2020

Answer

The Tempra 12 Plus is designed for producing 1.5 GPM. It will be enough if being used at one fixture at a time. For the best results, make sure each fixture is equipped with a 1.5 GPM aerator. If you have any further questions, please call our Technical Support Department at 1-800-582-8423 ext 6. Thank You!

I installed this unit in August of 2019 (one year ago) and it is one of the best investments I've made since purchasing my condo. This unit replaced a 30 gallon electric tank water heater from the early 1990's which was not providing enough hot water for a bath or for two people to take showers. The tank had not been maintained so there was significant sediment which degraded the performance. The tank was installed in a cabinet near the breaker panel. The tank was a very tight fit--it's doubtful the anode was ever replaced as there was no headspace. After researching tankless units and consulting an electrician this model was the one recommended and for my application is the best solution. Our winter water temperature is 42 degrees F (southern Minnesota) and I had a limit to the electrical load so this unit is the largest I could install with those restrictions. From the photo you can see I am also limited to a small cabinet that used to hold the 30 gallon tank heater. This installation is in a condo with four fixtures that use hot water: a kitchen sink, lavatory sink, dishwasher, and shower/tub. This application has very short pipe runs--there is no recirculation pump for hot water or pipes inside exterior walls. The most difficult task was finding a plumber to install it--I called four reputable local ones and while their websites sold tankless units, the plumbers dispatched to estimate the job were all more keen to install a tank. I had to do a lot of research and speak with my local inspector to confirm that this could be installed; I found those with experience with tankless units (the inspector, electrician, and one plumber) knew a lot more about installation than those that just stuck to tank-type installations (the rest of the plumbers). Specific to the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 15 Plus--the "Plus" is necessary as it has a valve to regulate flow to maintain temperature and is unique to this brand. The installation and instruction booklet were well written, the unit has a clean appearance, and controls are simple to use. I do wish this had a remote display as it would be helpful to see the flow statistics from a better angle but I am limited to seeing the display where the unit is installed (inside a high cabinet). The interior construction is solid (a lot of copper) and straightforward--my electrician had no problem connecting it and it powered up right away. As for use, the water in a nearby faucet takes about 30-45 seconds to flow at the setpoint of 116F which is similar to what the tank unit performed at. Because the unit is tankless, there is no limit to the quantity of heated water. The unit is silent but in the winter if I'm filling the bathtub I can faintly hear the valve regulate the flow to maintain the outlet temperature of 116F I have the unit set to. The cabinet where the unit is installed has plenty of room to leave a flush kit in it and already had a drain (PVC pipe to vertical stack) from the former heater's TPR valve which the drain pan was plumbed onto. A big word of caution is that proper sizing a tankless unit is critical to your application and lifestyle--this unit is ideal for my application but in a house with several lavatories or a clothes washer it would be underpowered. I provided the electrician I hired with the spec sheet for this unit and he confirmed it would serve my needs--the vendor can also offer help in selecting the right unit. Tank-type units are more common in the U.S., often a little cheaper, and are simpler devices--since most homes come with one installed it's an easy choice to swap out one item that worked with a similar one--but in some applications a tankless unit is a smarter replacement. I don't have the measuring equipment in my home to see if this unit is saving me electricity over the 30-gallon tank unit--I haven't seen my electric bill go down significantly--this could be my usage habits as I no longer need to be concerned about running out of hot water.

We have had this installed for over a year now to provide hot water to one shower and two sinks (bathroom and kitchen). Great space saver compared to a lowboy 30gal hot water heater. It has worked flawlessly and the heat adjustment knob is awesome. Doesn’t take long to start having hot water. You do need a 50amp breaker with this unit in your panel. Thinking about replacing our 50gal tank with another one of these.

This water heater is replacing a slightly older Stiebel Eltron Tempra 15 Plus that had been in service for a little over four years and developed problem. It was easy to replace since the wiring and plumbing were already in place for this size unit. So far this unity is working great but on the previous unit I did notice a big reduction in hot water flow in the shower during the cold weather months in NW Florida. As the incoming water temperature drops the unit will automatically decrease the water volume to insure the heaters control the water temperature you have selected. This company does make several different size water heaters so keep in mind the wiring and breakers have to be matched to the size unit you purchase. The first one you install will require an electrician and plumber to set it up.
