Hello, can this be used outside on a deck or is it just for inside use? Thanks.

Asked by DCH July 15, 2020

Answers

I wouldn't use it outside unless it was protected from the elements. The finish and wood would breakdown. It's not complicated to remove the gate from the mounting bracket, so you could remove the gate when its not in use to protect it from rain, snow, sun damage.

Will this work with 1 inch wrought iron railing at top of stairs?

Asked by Peg July 4, 2020

Answer

With the powerful zip ties that come with the gate, I do not see any issue with installation and security. It is designed for multiple installation types (Almost universal).

It is a reddish brown color.

Can this be stained a darker color?

Technically, yes it can be stained a darker color. But that entails disassembly, stripping, staining desired color, clear coat, and reassembly. Sounds like a lot of work to me.

Set it for what ever height you would like. Just take in account how much space it takes to pass threw the opening.

What do you recommend to prevent the zip ties from scratching the banister?

Asked by KMo March 31, 2019

Our installation kit came with guides that attach to the bannister with sticky ttape, the zip ties slide through these and do not touch our bannister. Daughter recommended sturdy cotton fabric in a color similar to bannister attached to bannister under zip ties.

I bought this 4 months ago, did it have a warranty, the top broke

Asked by Mike December 11, 2018

Answer

Hello Mike, I do believe these do have warranties, and although mine have not broken yet, I am sure some will. I would call the company and explain what actually broke and give them a date of purchase and see what they can do for you. I have received some items from different places damaged or they break weeks or a few months later and pretty much I have never had a problem where they do not send you a replacement part. I actually called the company to see if they sell the hardware kit alone, and although they do, they sent me one just because they stand behind their products ..

Is this gate safe to install at the top of the stairs?

Asked by MrFixIt October 4, 2018

Answers

YES, I would assume it is as safe as any others out there. I installed one on my son's steps at the top, and my 2-year-old grandson does play around with it but has not yet opened it, or gotten tangled with it.

What’s the maximum size for square banisters?

No, we installed it along two walls.

The locking mechanism is sufficiently difficult to defeat a 3 year old. The lock must be squeezed up and down. It does the job and works where there is a banister on one side. Other stair gates must be screwed in on both sides. We bought this because it was available in the store. A better gate constructed of steel was available online but would have required 7 - 10 business days to arrive, which was too slow. The wood in the gate itself is a cheap, foreign wood. It is not oak or a similar strong wood. The hinge is drilled into the ends of the horizontal members of the gate. The thickness of the horizontal members are only about 1/8" on each side thicker than the diameter of the hinge component. In the photo I supplied, this weakness if the portion between my thumb and forefinger. This means that with a strong shove on the hinge side, this horizontal gate member will likely shatter. The straps work but the stiff material is not the best material and prevents a really snug fit around the banister. Wrapping a stiff strap around a square banister does not maximize the surface area contact between the strap and the banister, so the brackets are prone to slipping. The attachment brackets for the banister are supplied with adhesive pads. These pads are the type that probably would tear the paint off the banister. A better quality pad would be a high quality rubber like neoprene. The pad is thin, too. I kept the waxy paper on the pad because I anticipate adjusting the installation after a few days of use and do not want the pad to tear off the paint or tear apart and remain on the banister. This entire gate should have been designed so as to be removable without wrecking the banister finish. The adhesive pads make it impossible to adjust the height of the gate without destroying the pad. Once those pads are stuck you must tear them apart to move the gate up or down even a fraction of an inch. We have a wall on one side and a banister on the other, so I screwed the latch side to the wall and used all four provided straps on the hinge side. Again, the stiff straps do not fit well around the square top nor square bottom portion of our banister. The other two straps do not fit well around the round portions either. Overall, the construction is cheap. It works but it is cheaply built and needs improvement in the banister attachment brackets and straps. I am hoping this gate lasts for 2 years. For $89 we purchased a gate worth no more than $40. If the online gate also made for a bannister installation was available faster then we would not have purchased this one. I doubt this gate will last one year.

If you need a gate to go between two banisters, this is the one. The bottom of my stairs is 46" wide and this worked. I didn't use the little foot on the bottom of it because of my setup, and it works just fine. I have a relatively new home with big square stair banisters. This hooked up well. When you open the gate, you slide the gate back away, then swing the gate away. It stuck a bit at first, so I oiled the gate with WD-40 and then wood polish oil - that helped - and the gates seems to be opening easier and easier as we use it. The gate has safely kept my 1 year old son from climbing the stairs. I really like this gate.

Best gate for stairs with banister on both sides
We love this gate! It is very secure to the banisters and we've never had any issue with our toddler or large dog budging this gate without having to drill any holes in the woodwork.

A fairly solid gate to keep an infant from going down the stairs. The finnish will get scratched as we expand and retract the size, but i think the wood looks better than the metal and plastic gates out there. We use the gate fully extended and it does stick a bit when extending it all the way... it requires some finesse and practice. Overall it accomplished our goal. Miunted to banister and a wall (stud). I did need to put my own holes thru the metal mounts to fit it correctly. Also, the included screws are cheap.
