Q:Some of the comments mention an epoxy or glue that is needed to assemble this. When I checked, the pdf instructions reference "if the adhesive is included". How do you know if the adhesive is included or not?

A:  I’m not sure if there is a way to tell, but when I ordered mine it was missing the glue. I called the company with this question and got a response from the owner stating that glue should have been included. They immediately shipped the glue out and I received it the next day.

A:  If you bought the kit it should be included, mine was. I had left over glue, so it depends on how much you use.

A:  Adhesive was included and adequate.

A:  The adhesive is included. It is a standard caulk type tube that requires a caulk gun to use.

Overall, this is a good product and expect this to provide energy benefits over the long term. There are some opportunities for improving this product, especially given the higher cost, including: 1. Add another tube of adhesive for this product. One tube is not enough, so I bought a tube of silicone to finish putting it together. 2. The method for installing the 3 handles does not look like it will stand the test of time (using plastic threaded fasteners that are pushed into the foam board). I'd recommend an outer plastic mechanism (similar to a zip tie) that wraps around the product and fastens to the holes in each handle. 3. I'd recommend the shell of the product (the side facing the attic when fully installed) to have an outer layer of Reflectix. I added this layer along with the silicone adhesive and aluminum foil tape.

Thick insulation and airtight. Overall great product. This product is very easy to install and should be durable enough, with care, to last the rest of my life. The sturdy cover lifts off easily, and the removable front piece with handle moves out of the way for easy access onto the plywood attic flooring. For installation, I highly recommend you also purchase a $5 can of spray foam (such as "Great Stuff") and use that all around the inside and outside edge of the cover, and also to seal up gaps around the rough opening so their is no air leakage through the framed opening. The product photo on the Home Depot website does not show it, but on my cover it has a label stuck on the underside of the cover with the product name and "R-38". This is useful for anyone who may happen to go up in the attic in the future so they know what it is. I was thinking about building my own insulated cover for the attic pull-down stairs, but those giant sheets of foam insulation are very expensive, and it would have been a pain to glue two layers together to make a high enough R-value. This product creates a very airtight seal - a superior way to seal up an air leak and uninsulated spot in my home.

Overall the product is quite simple and somewhat easy to install. I haven't had it long enough to know if it has significantly reduced my electric bill. I didn't rate it 5 stars because of the following: 1. I found the directions somewhat less than clear especially in regards to sealing the assembly to the floor. 2. For the price, it should have included a tube of Styrofoam adhesive so one does not have to run back to the store. 3. The handles are adequate but the plastic 2" push pins are cheap and do not hold the handles securely to the Styrofoam. Instead, they should include 1/4"-20 carriage bolts of the right length, with either a backing plate or large washers and nuts for the other end. They should also have predrilled holes for the bolts. 4. The 2 right angle brackets are not enough to hold the entire assembly in place from moving laterally. The instructions say only to use them if you leave the end piece free to be removed so the long pieces at that end do not "bow out". I recommend they include 4-6 brackets to hold the back or other end from moving around also. Six brackets would be ideal. 5. The price, too high for what you get. I know that the "value" is in the energy savings but the cost of this Styrofoam is quite minimal and for a premium price I expect a premium product that comes ready to be fully assembled out of the box. Add the items I suggest, improve the instructions a bit and it is well worth the current price.

              Response from THD-CSJul 14, 2017
Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, we have reached out to the manufacturer and their response is. "1. Instructions- We reviewed the instructions and made the needed addition. Thank you for the suggestion. 2. Adhesive- adhesive is included with the kit. It should have been with the handles and L-brackets. Please give us a call at 800-ESS-4NRG and we will send a tube out to you. 3. Thank you for the suggestion. We will review handle options. 4. Cost of Styrofoam. Unfortunately, the cost of high density expanded polystyrene cut to custom dimensions is much more expensive than other alternatives. ESS uses this material for several reasons: * High insulating value per inch for an R-38 product * Very dense, durable end product * Lightweight * No off gassing

              Awesome Second Purchase
I purchased The Energy Guardian Kit for my home in 2011. I was very impressed with the speed of shipment, quality of product, ease of assembly, insulating factor, price to value and durability. My wife and I just purchased a new home and the pull-down attic stairs were not insulated – there was little doubt in my mind we were going to make another purchase. So last month I received my second Kit, the very same high-level of quality and I just couldn’t be happier with the product. I made a miscalculation in ordering, not taking my roof truss into consideration. So I made the decision to keep the product but cut a 45 degree notch in the box top edge to accommodate the intruding truss. I’ve attached two photos showing the result with no compromise to the structure of the Kit at all. You pay more for this product than the foil tents that are out there, but there is truly no comparison = this product has no equal. I need to correct my statement – you’re not paying, you’re investing! Another house? I will absolutely purchase again. Order with confidence.

Attic cover that goes beyond expectations
Searching for an attic cover I found a lot of stuff that looked like junk, or offered minimal insulation value. My father always said put your money insulation. I bought this, even though it was more expensive than other products and it has been worth every penny. When it arrived I was skeptical, it's made of heavy duty foam, but I remembered the 90 day guarantee and the 20 year warranty and decided to try it. I used their glue which works very well to do the brief assembly and set up and after all was said and done, let me repeat: IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY. I have recommended it to a few people who are also very happy, including the man from my oil supplier who came to fix my air handler. I have viewed it threw a thermal camera to see the effectiveness and felt the difference when opening it in winter to get the Christmas decorations down. As an added bonus the design keeps the dust from the attic insulation up in the attic where it belongs. Very happy will continue to recommend. Pros: High insulation value R-38! 20 year warranty Keeps dust and debris from insulated attic out of home Cons: It is made out of foam so I guess you could break it? I mean if you really tried.

Does not fit our attic access. The attic access was close to the exterior wall so the framework in the attic would not allow the Energy Guardian to sit properly. We were unable to use it and had to return it. I would make sure to measure before purchasing.

The instructions said that the adhesive would dry after 20 minutes. I waited a half hour, and it hadn’t dried at all. The pieces came apart easily, creating a messy situation. Finally used plumber’s tape to hold everything together. Very disappointed.

I had limited space so I had to improvise to make it work. It is definitely better than it was. Had to have a frame made that was only 8” high instead of the 10…and used the frame pieces towards the rafters and one half of the top pieces.
