About This Product

Whatever winter throws at you, throw it right back, up to 45 feet, with our Power Max 828 OAE 28" all-star snow hurler. This 252cc Toro Premium 4-cycle OHV, electric start engine will clear your way 28 inches wide and 21 inches deep. Stick it to winter with our innovative Quick Stick control, allowing you rapid and simple one-handed manipulation of the steel chute direction and chute deflector. Steer yourself right (and left) with self propelled triggerless steering for fluid, tight turning-no triggers or levers required. Our exclusive Anti-Clogging System meters snow intake to reduce clogs and optimize clearing performance with no shear pins in sight. Instead, when our heavy-duty auger rolls into something hard, the engine purposely stalls to avoid damage. The sensational snow stats continue with Toro's commercial-grade gearbox, heavy-duty handle, steel chute, 16" tires, LED light, plus a 3-year limited warranty. Go undefeated against winter.

  • Chute Control. Quickly change the chute and deflector direction with a single, smooth motion thanks to the Quick Stick chute control.
  • Stay the Course. Minimizes clogging and routes heavy snow away from chute and back into the auger with Toro's patented Anti-Clogging System.

A:  Hi, there! Thanks for your question. This unit #38830, can forward and reverse, with the speed selector having 6 forward and 2 reverse gears. To change speeds, release the traction lever and shift the speed-selector lever to the desired position. To disengage the traction drive, release the left (traction) lever. You can view more information on operating this unit starting on page 13 of the manual at: https://www.toro.com/getpub/188264. If the machine moves when the traction lever is in the released position, check the traction cable; refer to Checking and Adjusting the Traction Cable on page 19 of the manual at: https://www.toro.com/getpub/188264. Received 1/1924 1st snowfall 2” started 2pulls ran great blew over 40 ft 2nd snowfall 15”again started right up but struggled to go thru snow and left a lot of snow on side even though I only was in 1st gear 2/3 into the snow I think gov not working because rpm don’t increase with load, like my Honda hs1132 did for over 18 years other than that, I like the toro its features traction steering belt rugged and 1/2 the price of Honda. I would give it a 5 star if I didn’t have a problem with gov.It does throw the snow 40’ and it doesn’t plug up I can’t answer the service question waiting to call customer sumptuous

New in late 2022. Already rust on auger housing.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought an 828 in late 2022.used it 3 times. Was waxing it in November and noticed a blemish on the auger housing. It already is rusting. Was offered touch up paint and then a new auger housing. Not happy about the solutions.

              Chute flex needs improvement
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] While the build and power is excellent, I find the single knuckle chute disappointing. For a machine in the HD lineup, it should have two knuckles. Additionally, with the metal chute it does not flex as much as the older plastic chute; I do however like the metal chute better.

              Operating Manual Not accurate
"No shear pins needed! Built 2x stronger. Hardened gears and no shear pins to break or replace in the cold." This is what Toro advertises about this model. However, it is not entirely true. While it may not use "shear pins" per se, there are in fact two "shear bolts" located on both ends of the auger shaft. They are even shown in Fig 35, page 22 of the operating manual but not noted. Further more, no mention of them is written in the trouble shooting guide under "engine runs but the machine throws snow poorly or not at all". In fact there are two more that certified Toro mechanic pointed out to me for the impeller shaft also not detailed in the owner's manual. So in conclusion the operating manual needs to be revised to include the location and replacing of the these "shear bolts" other wise the unsuspecting and mechanically challenged consumer will be set with frustration and unneeded costly repairs because they could've replaced the broken bolts themselves.

                Oil is leaking everywhere
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Only used this two times and oil is leaking all over the place, engine sounds like it’s knocking. Horrible purchase, not sure how much it’s going to cost to fix it as I’m still waiting for it to be looked at.

                Best I’ve owned.
3 seasons and with slight maintenance it starts first pull every season. I do drain the gas at the end of the season. It eats through high impact snow berms with patience but gets the job done in a reasonable time. I highly recommend the power and the smoothness of controlling this machine
