Product Details

USG Sheetrock Brand Dust Control Joint Compound is a lightweight, ready-mixed compound featuring a unique formula that binds up fine residue during sanding to form heavier particles that tend to fall to the floor instead of clouding the air. Each job finishes more quickly and cleans up faster with less nuisance from airborne sanding. Use for embedding USG Sheetrock Brand Paper Joint Tape, applying drywall filling and finishing coats, and covering fasteners and USG Sheetrock Brand Corner Bead and Trim. USG ready-mixed joint compounds are preferred for consistently high-quality work. Superior formulations are premixed to a creamy, smooth consistency and are essentially free of crater-causing air bubbles. They can be used in hand or machine-tool applications and offer excellent slip, bond, and easy workability.
  • Pre-mixed compound for minimal mixing, thinning and retendering
  • Bonds like a taping product for a tough, tight bond
  • May be considered as an engineering control under OSHA and NIOSH regulation and guidance documents
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified for low-emitting performance
  • Return Policy

Q:Can I use this to skim coat painted walls?
by|Mar 12, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  Yes it can be used for skim coating. If you use a roller for it just cut it with a bit of water. Mix to about a yoghurt like feel. Roll and smooth out. (Use a 14 inch or wider smoothing tool)

by|Mar 16, 2023

A:  Jimmy Thank you for your inquiry. USG recommends using Sheetrock All Purpose Joint Compound or Sheetrock Plus 3 Joint Compound for skim coating. If the walls have already been painted use fine sand paper or mesh to lightly sand them before applying the skim coat. Hope this helps.

Q:Here are the bubbles on the wall. I?m going over another layer of compound. The product in the container itself has many visible bubbles.

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. Air bubbles can appear when applying joint compound over previously painted surfaces because air and moisture from the compound comes to the surface, rather than being absorbed by the paper face. We recommend using a fine mesh or sand paper to rough up the painted surface before applying the joint compound. Overmixing the joint compound will add air to it. Reduce the speed of the drill to slow down the mixing paddle. Be sure to apply the joint compound with your knife at a 45 degree angle. If the knife is at a tighter angle you may be forcing air into the compound as you apply it. If bubbles do appear they can either be smoothed out with the drywall knife while the compound is wet, or sanded out after the compound dries. Hope this helps.

Q:Why all the bubbles and the minimal time to work with it? Am I missing something?

        Answer This Question

A:  Eric Thank you for your inquiry. If you are applying joint compound over a previously painted surface you are likely to get bubbles or micro-perforations in the compound because the air and the moisture from the compound comes up to the surface. We recommend first roughing up the paint surface with a fine mesh or sand paper before applying the joint compound. Hope this helps.

Q:can this be used without joint tape? what is the drying time?
          by|Feb 15, 2023

          Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. If you are finishing joints you will need to also use Sheetrock Paper Joint Tape with the Sheetrock Dust Control Joint Compound. The drying time for ready mixed joint compounds varies depending on temperature, humidity and how thick it was applied. Ready mixed joint compounds can be applied up to 1/8" thick. The minimum room temperature should be 50 degrees Fahrenheit and the room should be well ventilated. There is no specific drying time that can be given due to the differences in jobsite conditions. If you are unsure if the compound is completely dry you can test it by applying plastic film over an area and taping it on all 4 sides. Wait overnight and if droplets of moisture appear on the underside of the film then the compound is not yet dry.

A:  Joints require tape. At least 24 hours

              Great crafting product
I'm a crafter who loves Christmas but has limited resources. I saw extra large get lawn ornaments in catalogs & fell in love, but the prices were prohibitive. I found my own workaround using large children's play balls. I covered them with several layers of newspaper soaked in white glue. Then a layer of paper soaked in a diluted slurry of joint compound. Last layer was joint compound, straight out of the bucket. Let everything dry completely between layers. These are meant to be outside so waterproofing was important. So, next, a coat of oil-based gesso. Then a craft paint called Patio Paints. And lastly, a coat of your oil-based Varathane Spar Urethane.

Wish I woul have read reviews...
Terrible all the way around. It takes so long to dry and even when it does, its very soft and not durable at all. Ive been working on coating the surrounding frame of my daughters closet for over a week because it takes so many coats and so long to dry and gets damaged with the slightest bumb against it. On top of that, its called Dust Control, which ahould be considered false advertisement. Even with the fan on, windows open and a shopvac to catch the dust, my fire alarm went off TWICE because the dust was literally SO THICK in the air. It was terrible. These pictures show just some of the dust that fell from hand sanding a 10”x5’ strip on the wall. Will be returning because this is a complete rip off.

Smooth mix. Good consistency for use on paper or mesh tapes. Works for tape coat, skim coat, touch up and texturing. Holds well and did not sag, crack or shrink. Reasonable drying time. Good value for the size/volume. Good size for patch work. Nothing to mix. Easy clean up.
