Questions & Answers

If doing this in December in a heated garage, what process would you recommend (when to stain, how to ventilate, safety etc).

Answer This Question

Thank you for your interest, Samuel! For the best application results with Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain, make sure the ambient temperature is between 60 and 90 °F with humidity below 85%. For proper curing, the ideal conditions are 70 °F with 50% relative humidity. Good ventilation is essential, so if possible, open a window or door in the garage and use fans to maintain proper airflow. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

      Can this cover old stain
      ByDec 15, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Great question! For the best color and appearance, we do recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain to bare, sanded wood. If applying to an already stained surface, the penetration and color depth of this stain will be dependent on how much stain is already in the wood pores. This is also a semi-transparent stain and will not completely cover the existing color of the surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can this stain be used on already stained and cleared wood. Does it need to top coated.
          ByDec 2, 2025
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Great question, Sharon. Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain is a penetrating wood stain and cannot be applied to finished wooden surfaces. The previous finish will hinder the stain from penetrating, leaving a tacky finish on the surface. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

I live in an old house with old fashioned oak floors (not the modern no-wax hardwood). The finish has worn off of some boards and I want to refinish them, but not the whole floor. There is no polyurethane on the existing floor. Can I use wax instead?

Would this look good on a walnut butcher block or would it just be too dark?
              ByNov 13, 2025
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

We're happy to clear things up, Keith. While Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain can be applied to wooden surfaces, we do not recommend it for a butcher block. This is not considered to be a food safe finish and cannot be applied to surfaces that will make direct food contact. Instead, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil as this provides a food safe finish. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-Pint-Butcher-Block-Oil-in-Hazelnut-359024/314884207 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

No Bone Appétit For This "Stain"
Varathane "Bone" Wood Stain is anything BUT..It is BATTLESHIP GRAY. Went down like a paint, wiped off 60 seconds later; and still looked like Battleship Gray paint. Not at all like the stained pine in the photo. Doesn't do justice to the PINE grain either. Too bad, I really had a bone appétit!

The color on the display is false. Ebony comes out black. Not a dark brown.

We appreciate you reaching out! The final color of Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain will be dependent on the type of wood you are staining, the condition and cut of the wood. The dwell time of the stain can also play a factor, with a longer dwell time giving a deeper color. Because of this, it is important to apply the wood stain in a test area first to ensure a favorable color.

Good stain. Matches with our cabinets & decor. Only time will tell whether this will last for 10 plus years as the previous stain on the floor.

We appreciate you reaching out and sharing your experience. To ensure the best color with Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain, it must be applied to bare sanded wood. Any excess stain also needs to be wiped away after a few moments. Please keep in mind that since this is a penetrating semi-transparent stain, the final color will be dependent on the porsity of the wood, the cut, and the wood type.

One coat sprayed - rich color and close match!
Tested Varathane Colonial Maple Premium Fast Dry Interior Wood Stain, to match color on maple kitchen cabinets. Decided to spray to keep the grain subtle and not pop. Used a piece of maple board from HD as well. Hand sanded with 120 and then 180 grit. Applied Varathane Pre-stain. Used one of those cheap canned air sprayer from Preval. Amazed at how rich the color turned out with just one coat.

We may be able to help! To ensure proper drying, it is essential that all excess stain is removed from the surface shortly after application. You also want to ensure that you are applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain within the recomended temperatures. To help remove the tacky stain on the surface, we recommend using mineral spirits and clean cloths.
