What wood conditioner do I use with this- does it matter if it's oil or water based? And what do I use as a matte finish top coat to help protect it?
Asked by: CA
Use an oil-based conditioner on soft woods like fir or pine after sanding. Follow all instructions on can or use & care sheets. You can add any oil-based polyurethane satin (matte) finish after the last stain coat is dry.

What if I do sanding woods that stained with darker color and then apply this one? I used Varathane cognac 3X product(model # 271150 at homedepot) on maple wood panels(indoor stair steps) one year ago. It came out much darker than what I expected. I plan to sanding the wood panels well and then apply this gunstock classic stain over it. Is it a bad idea? I am not sure how the sanding remove the stains very clearly, either. Any suggestions?
Asked by: TOM
You would need to sand until the natural wood is exposed to remove all previous stain or it will just become darker. Good luck!

Do i need to apply a sealer over this product? If so what is recommended?

I am applying the stain on the stair treads of my staircase.
Asked by: Heather
Hi Heather, thank you for reaching out! Once our Varathane Wood Stain has been applied, a clear protective polyurethane must be applied to protect the finish. We recommend our Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish Polyurethane, which provides a crystal clear, protective finish: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-1-gal-WaterTite-Mold-and-Mildew-Proof-White-Oil-Based-Waterproofing-Interior-Exterior-Paint-2-Pack-5001/204068078 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

I have removed the flooring from my bathroom and closet and I'm using the stain on the subfloors that I've etched planks into. I was going to go with the Ebony but I saw how rich and dark the Classic Black looked so I chose that one. After 1 coat I am already in love. It has given my etched edges a darker black color so it actually looks like aged plank floors. I am in the process of stenciling random mandalas on the subfloor and then I'll seal. 1 coat will be plenty for the look I am trying to get but if you're wanting a true black I'd go with 2 coats. My only complaint is dry time. For some reason I thought it would dry almost as quickly as the Varathane Premium (1 hour), it does not. However, this deep rich black wasn't available in the Premium so it's a trade off. I am so happy with the way my master bath and closet are turning out I may extend the floor into the master bedroom.

When I bought this stain I was looking for the Minwax that came in a tube, that HD don't carry any more. When I applied this stain, I was very disappointed in the color. It took three coats to get close to the color on the can. Now that I've got three coats on, it seems that its not going to completely dry. After approximately three weeks the boards are still tacky. Rustoleum should stick to paint and get out of the stain business. I have to admit Rustoleum when I complained to that company Rustoleum did provide me a refund. But I had to buy router bits sand paper to finish my project.

For those who want to use a solvent based wood stain this product is excellent. This Wood Stain is a high performance stain that requires only 1-coat but since i wanted a deeper color additional coats were applied without issue after a one hour setting time between coats, much faster than traditional wood stains. Easily brushes on without the use of a pre-stain or wood conditioner but sanding the wood in preparation is always best. A protective coat of satin finish polyurethane was applied after a 24 hour drying time to allow the stain to fully penetrate and set. The manufacturer states: Ideal for use on all interior wood projects such as furniture, cabinets, doors and trim, floors and paneling Covers up to 70 sq. ft. Semi-transparent formula imparts beautiful color while enhancing the wood's natural grain Enriched with nano pigments and soy oil for exceptional color clarity and dries in only 1 hour Excellent color clarity Dries to touch in 30 minutes Cleans up with mineral spirits

We used the Minwax then switched because of availability to Varathane Weathered Oak and then needed to switch back to the Minwax so everything we have is the same color. The difference is attached in how light of grey we wanted. We were amazed how well the Varathane stain covers but at the same time wished we didn't buy it because of the added coverage and deeper color versus the light grey we were looking for. We applied this to pine tongue and groove boards. If we wanted more grey of color we would buy this again. For future headache relief, someone should stay purchase stain from the same company as to not have two different colors when the name of the color is supposedly the same.

This stain does not look like mahogany at all. the stain looks more like pecan of road. I have used red mahogany stains before from other brand and liked them, but I decided to try this brand. I guess that it was a huge miss take. I would not recommend, because of how off the color is. If you want a real red mahogany stain I would say go with the minwax brand.

Compared to Min Wax which I normally buy, this product is watered down and does not stain anywhere near as well as Min Wax stain. At this point, I can't recall why I bought this varathane product, most likely was out of the Min Wax dark walnut stain. Would go to another store to get Min Wax before I would buy this product again,

Was looking for Olde Maple colored stain (w/poly). Only 1 maple colored stain available in replacement brand, & it wasn’t w/ poly. Bought it; but it wasn’t even close to color of stain that I needed. Very disappointed!
