Questions & Answers

We used a grey stain, looks bad. Can we sand the stairs and use this instead for weathered look ?

Asked by: Me
Additional answer - this product effects a very thin layer of wood. I sense that it would wear off quickly unless top coated with a lacquer.

How do we make our 20 yr old oak cabinets look weathered with this product?

Asked by: Rodney
Remove finish from cabinets. Make sure the side panels are real wood and go for it

What's the difference between this and a typical regualar grey stain? Is there any benefit for using this vs a stain?

Asked by: Jacob
I love this stuff so much that I have used 11 cans of it. There is absolutely no odor, is easy to use & makes the wood look aged in less than 30 minutes.

Can you use the weathering accelerator and then use a darker stain over it to get desired weathered color?

Asked by: Tigerwoodworker
Not according to the directions on the can. It is applied over bare wood or wood that has had all prior finish removed.

If you're going for something in the bluish gray tones, this works well on maple. It's not the exact color I want to use for my cabinets, but it creates a much more uniform, chalky color than a traditional stain. I would consider it for other projects, however. As with any stain, test it first on whatever type of wood you plan to use under the same lighting conditions. I also tried a vinegar and steel wood mix, which highlighted the wood grain in a more pleasing manner.

We used this product to treat an entire Timber Frame truss system made from rough-sawn Douglas Fir timbers. The design team was looking for a classic weathered appearance and the target sample was actually a piece of vintage barn timber. We tried many other stain products without success until we discovered the Weathered Wood Accelerator created a nearly perfect match. I definitely recommend two coats for best results since the first coat left the appearance a little splotchy but the second coat looked great. We have messed around with vinegar and steel wool in the past but brewing a consistent formula is very touchy on a large scale project like the types we do so having a product that creates reliable results is invaluable. You can be sure we'll be adding this to our line of available finish options in the future. J.M.Coleman - Lancaster County Timber Frames Inc.

I was looking to upgrade a free pine bedroom set I found, had hoped to give it a rustic look for our cottage. This product worked perfectly. Unlike a stain it retained the natural wood grain and final product was grey with tones of the natural brown wood. The picture doesn't really show how pretty the wood turned out. Highly recommend if you are looking for a barn board finish.

It's become the inspiration for many projects! I can't wait to try roughing up the board with a hammer or using un-sanded boards. Great product.

I put it in a spray bottle to get even coverage on my scrollsaw projects. So far I have purchased and used 4 quarts and am almost ready to order 2 more. Love it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It is definitely purple, not a gray weathered look I read the reviews online that said it was purple, but I had to try it myself. I followed the instructions precisely. It was untreated, raw pine. We sanded it. It is so purple. It looks almost like purple chalk paint. I recommend the company updating its formula for the weathered wood look. I wanted a gray. Do not purchase it, unless you're like me and just have to see for yourself. Try it on a scrap piece of wood.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk This stuff is awful. It totally turned pine purple! So I did some research and found Weatherwash, which looked amazing on my project! Weatherwash gave me the Restoration Hardware look I wanted! Looks like Varathane is ripping off another smaller company and doing it poorly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Purple on Pine but ... This product on display looks great but even on pine I don't know how they got that color. I sanded it, and it's still purple. But.... if you do a steel wool - vinegar stain first - let the wood cure a couple hours then add this weathered wood treatment then you have this beautiful grey wood tone ... won't buy again.
