Answer This Question
A:Â While I have not experienced your material issues with the Hammer, I can not commit Home Depot to an exchange. Having said that, I have found them flexible and generally very committed to customer service. I would recommend a trip to your local Home Depot and discuss a possible exchange.

The Vaughan 23 ounce milledface framing hammer with a 17 inch hickory wood handle is sturdy for shock balancing during usage. You can really feel the hammer doing it's purpose of absorbing the strong stability of every swing. The head of the hammer is large, polished forged steel head with a milled staking face, magnetic nail starter is wonderful and covers a great amount of space. I'm all about safety so please use PPE. Use eye protection along with long sleeve shirt for proper safety. This hammer can take a beating for certain. Warning this hammer is serious and hatchet handle very well for large long lasting work. It's my first wood framing hammer and takes care of the job. I found that the smooth claws are rather useful for ripping, splitting 2X4, wrecking/demo down drywall, corner beads pull, pry studs, also useful to bend out of shape saw blades. This hammer very functional. I love it.
I've used the hammer for many in home and work projects. Great from framing floors, concrete pad, demolition and more.

The long hickory shaft coupled to the 23 ounce drop forged head makes for an excellent hammer. Other features are the milled striking face, long claw for removing nails and ripping boards and the nail starter feature with nail capture magnet.
In use the hammer is a pleasure to use. The long shaft provides great leverage meaning nails can be hammered home with the minimum number of blows. The handle also provides great shock absorption so there are no severe shocks to hand or arm. Being able to reach into the pile of nails and retrieve one magnetically is a time saver but I did not find the nail starter feature that effective. That may well be my lack of familiarity with this feature. The long claw is a good feature and with the leverage of the handle nails can be separated from wood easily. Vaughan is proud to boast that this high quality tool is made in the USA.

Massive hammer for the most demanding tasks. This hammer feels like a weapon due to the length of the handle and the weight of the head. I did not realize how heavy 23 ounces can be until I grabbed this hammer. It seems like you could completely sink a 3 1/2" nail with one swing.
The magnetic nail start head is a great feature. A nail slot sits nicely at the front of the hammer head. It includes a small magnet that keeps the nail secure. One swing to get the nail started and the you can wack it with what seems like your new mini sledge hammer.
Removing nails is a snap. The long handle provides great leverage to tackle any stubborn or bent nails. The bumpy (milled) surface of the hammer head helps to prevent sliding off the intended target.

This is a really good, hard hitting hammer. I was really impressed with the size of this thing. This hits with just as much force, if not more, than my 28 oz Stanley AntVibe framing hammer. The handle feels good and fits will in my hand. The head of the hammer has some features I really like. First, the magnet for the nail holder works well and allowed me to set 10 penny nails in 2x framing material with ease. I like the design of this over my AntVibe because it doesn't hold the nail as far back, which means more sticks out in front of the face. I like this for setting nails quickly. The magnet held firm and worked well. I also like that the waffle face is ground off around the outer rim of the face. That way if you miss you don't tear the skin off your thumb. This pulls nails well but I think other designs are more efficient. I was sinking 10 penny nails quickly with just a few strikes.
All around, this is a fantastic hammer for the price. It hits hard, sinks nails with ease, and has the force to put studs and beams into place.
