As you'd expect from Vaughan, this is a workhorse hammer, not a 5 dollar toss in the junk drawer and use for hanging pictures hammer. I like a heavy head for driving framing nails, and 28oz is plenty heavy. I also like a wooden handle, and this is hickory (best handle material if you ask me), well shaped, and perfectly balanced.
I'm not super excited about the powder coating, which to me seems a lot more like the epoxy coating that comes on some newer framing squares. It makes the smooth face a little slippery, and the nail heads wear it right off. I'd prefer it bare steel. Yes, it will rust, but I oil down all my steel regularly to prevent that.

This is a large, high quality, heavy duty, 28 oz. carbon steel framing hammer with a hickory wood handle. It's comfortable to hold and packs a wallop when you strike. You can easily pound in any size nail with only one strike or two. It might get a little heavy after using for awhile but compensates for it by needing less strikes to drive each nail.

I asked myself, what is the difference between this hammer and one I already have. I found out there are a few important differences that make this hammer a better choice when it comes to framing and construction. First of all, the weight is more than a regular hammer, typically 20-32 oz. Then there’s also the claw part of the hammer which is generally straighter on a framing hammer than a claw hammer. Finally, a longer handle which allows for a harder swing so you need fewer swings to drive the nail in the wood. These hammers are not made for delicate work.

This is one big awesome hammer. At 28 oz., it's definitely a somewhat specialized tool--you don't want to use this for nailing things above your head. But it's great for basic framing jobs, and will sink a 2 1/2" nail in one or two blows. The handle is made from very straight, select hickory that is bound to last a lifetime and that transfers the energy efficiently to the business end of the hammer. Note the hammer also has a traditional claw for removing nails if the need arises.
