Q:What is the foam piece used for?

Answer This Question

A:  I have had several of these mortar boards and they all have had the foam piece on the handle. I suspect it is mainly to act as a cushion between your hand and the aluminum top for when it is loaded up with mud.

A:  It's just for comfort from holding a full hawk all day

A:  Mine never had a rubber grip. Only the unfinished wooden handle.

A:  That's an error in the description, the wood handle does not have a rubberized coating. The hawk I received is exactly the same as the one pictured here.

A:  Yes, the handle is detachable. It has four pieces. A separate carriage bolt, the wooden handle, a sponge gasket to go between the handle, and the aluminum hawk platter. The gasket is a "callus preventer." TIP: When purchasing the Wal-Board brand at HD, check the handle to make sure the drilled hole for the carriage bolt head is in the rounded end of the handle that goes away from the platter and not the square cut end. Otherwise, you will have to install the handle backwards. Also, check the rivets on the platter to make sure they are not loose. Good product for the price!

                    hawk not fit for purpose
The rivits connecting the handle are pultruding above the surface of the hawk so its impossible to move your knife over the surface without it being stopped by one of the (4) rivits, very poor design.

Lightweight and easy to use once you get used to not using a tray. I found it better when working on ceilings.

Pretty straightforward, but the fastening rivets weren’t flush with the plate. Manufacturing error.
