Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

Pressure-Treated Pine meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. This double treated Ground Contact lumber must be used for applications where treated lumber is difficult to maintain, repair or replace. Treated lumber is critical to the performance and safety of an entire system or construction such as deck joists, beams and ledger boards. An additional benefit of treated lumber is its defense against rot and insect infestation for its vast majority of applications. Southern yellow pine is responsibly manufactured, safe, and environmentally friendly when used as directed.Treated wood is typically still wet when it’s delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.
  • California residents
  • Made of southern yellow pine
  • Ground Contact treated lumber can be used in both Above Ground and Ground Contact exterior applications

  • #2 grade lumber has few defects, knots are well-spaced and do not exceed the size regulations.
  • Ideal for a variety of general uses including exposed structures, sill plates, decks, docks, ramps and other outdoor applications
  • Uniform thickness, density and appearance for stable and long lasting performance

Questions & Answers

Need to buy 8 pieces of your 8" x 10" x 6" treated wood, but all available sizes start from 8 fee...

Asked by Pablo June 14, 2018

I doubt that HD will cut an 8 feet piece down to make it 6 feet. You'll need to pull out your trusty hand saw or table saw.

Can this be sanded and stained with out disrupting the integrity of the wood and it’s treatment?

Asked by Mvh June 10, 2018

Yes, if you're using very fine sand paper and a CLEAR stain (which may be tinted for color if desired). But the key word is CLEAR. Quite a few Clear stains dry with a yellowish hue, so choose carefully. I would get a 1/2 pint can first to test it out in an unseen spot...just to see how it turns out b4 buying a 5-gallon drum of Clear stain.

Can you use treated lumber for planting beds for Vegetable?

Asked by whiskeylima May 31, 2019

Recommend lining the inside walls of the planter box with heavy duty black plastic. As long at the treated wood doesn't come in contact with you planting soil, you reduce any chance of contamination. That said, I think the chance of contamination is low without it.

What is the exact width of this 2 x 6 lumber?

Asked by carpenter May 8, 2019

1 1/2 x 5 1/2

is this safe for a picnic table

Asked by dh May 4, 2018

Yes the 2x6 would make a great table

Does it cost extra to have length cut into requirement size?

Asked by Scott March 11, 2018

Yes - I had a number of 8-ft. boards cut to 4 ft. length. There was no charge for the cuts.

So is this wood acceptable for a planter box that touches the ground?

Asked by HeatMiser May 14, 2020

I bought three of them two are light and one is really heavy why??

Asked by Jdest May 27, 2020

The light one has dried out and the other two are still wet

How much will I need to build 6 feet width by 10 feet length deck with same measurements for 4 sided wall enclosure

Asked by Lisa July 9, 2017

Lisa, please meet with a local PRO associate at Home Depot to discuss your project needs

Can these boards be submerged in standing fresh water of approx. 6 inches during rain seasons?

Asked by Robert August 6, 2019

poor lumber selection
Really disliked the way they select their lumber for the pick up folks. Threw clearance lumber into my pick up order. Really trash way to force someone to come back INTO the store and pick out the lumber. Ended up using the lumber just to avoid having to drive back to exchange it.
