About This Product

Pressure-Treated decking boards are treated for protection against termites and rot. Ideal for a variety of applications including decks, play sets, landscaping, and other outdoor projects where lumber is exposed to the elements. When used properly it is both safe and environmentally friendly.Treated wood is typically still wet when it's delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.

  • Made of southern yellow pine
  • Can be used in ground contact applications
  • 5/4 in. x 6 in. x 4 ft.
  • Pressure treated for long life
  • Can be painted or stained
  • WeatherShield includes water repellant in the treatment process
  • No two pieces of lumber are the same.
  • Color, grain pattern and texture will vary as well.
  • Premium grade lumber should be used when small knots are the desired appearance for your lumber project
  • Premium grade is a high-quality lumber that has smaller and fewer knots.

A:  Scott, This species of this wood is Southern Yellow Pine, which is considered a Softwood, which makes it better for accepting Pressure-Treatment.

Q:I know there are lots of factors, but if I were to store this in a climate controlled garage, are we looking at a 4-6 weeks for it to dry out or is it more like 4-6 months? Anybody have any insight? I am asking as I am going to be using solid stain

          Answer This Question

A:  Bizzy, Because we are unsure of how the product was stored prior to purchasing, we say the best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

I purchase wood often from Home Depot because of the delivery. I have consistently found that a minimum 10% of whatever raw wood I buy is unusable

Purchased to make a fire pit table top. Boards were for the most part fairly square. Cut them to length and then used a Kreg pocket hole jig to join the boards. Then used the router to create the circle. Didn't free hand built a little jig for the router. Fastened a couple pieces of scrap PT on the bottom to tie the boards together.

Dear Simpj, we appreciate you taking the time to let us know about your experience! Treated wood is typically still wet when it's delivered to our retailers. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp, which are natural occurrences of wood. If you would like the opportunity to discuss the issue further, please reach out to UFP Retail Solutions at UFPRetailCS@UFPI.com, referencing this review, and one of our customer service representatives will be happy to assist you.
