Q:Hi, I put up Western red cedar fence boards from home Depot (wet) a couple days ago. We have mixed weather coming up and I'm guessing it's going to be mixed until next year. Should I stain now or wait until next year?

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Matt! When applying Rust-Oleum Wolman F&P Finish and Preservative to new wood, it is best to let it weather. With Cedar or Redwood, “mill glaze” on the surface is a common condition. Use either Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckBrite powder concentrate or Deck & Fence Brightener liquid concentrate according to label directions, then conduct a Splash Test. If absorption is not improved, allow the wood to dry a minimum of 30 days in temperate weather (70°F and 50% RH), longer in cooler or more humid conditions. Test for absorption again before applying this product by performing a Splash Test again. A Splash Test is done by splashing water in several different areas on the surface to ensure the water readily absorbs into the wood. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Wolman-1-lb-DeckBrite-Wood-Cleaner-and-Coating-Prep-6-Pack-16001/204744697 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  I didn't see the need for most of what she said. Way over complicated. Buy a moisture meter and if 12% or less stain as long as you have 48 hours until it rains, stain it.

Q:1-yr old fence was stained by pros. Adding new fencing and want it to look the same. Paint canister they used is in photo-says it is "Pine". The photos show fence - doesn't look like pine to me. Is it? Is that what I should buy for new fence?

        Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for reaching out. Wolman F&P Golden Pine Wood Finish & Preservative is a deep penetrating transparent oil base stain, it is not pine, it is golden pine. The only way to have the new section of fence match the previous fence, is to use the exact same stain that was used on the original fence. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6.

Q:How long should I allow a new pressure-treated deck to weather before applying this F&P product?

          Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Jeff! When applying Rust-Oleum Wolman F&P Finish and Preservative to new wood, the surface may need to be treated with a brightener product and a splash test must be performed. Water must readily absorb into the surface. If using a wood brightener does not help improve water absorption, then the wood must be allowed to dry a minimum of 30 days in temperate weather (70 °F and 50% relative humidity), longer in cooler or more humid conditions. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

This does what it says it does. Longer drying time but that is to be expected with an oil based product. The finish is Amazing! I used it on a Redwood pergola structure and birch gate and I am extremely satisfied with the result. I did a second coat after letting the product dry for 3 days since there were dry spots.

I have liked Wolmans products and I'm hoping this 5 gallons of F&P Redwood will serve well as a preservative. My main disappointment is the color/appearance. This was called "Redwood" but when I coated a new piece of lumber, it looked nothing like redwood. I've included a photo of true redwood with a clear finish (left) and Wolman F&P "Redwood" stain applied to pine (right). The stain looks pretty, but I don't think you should call it "Redwood". I may try adding a dye to get the color I need. It is a problem because I want to match some previously stained and /or painted wood in a 300 foot wood fence. I may check with the seller to see of they have any suggestions.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience, Bob. Our Wolman F&P Finish and Preservative is a transparent finish, and will not be able to create such a dark color on a light wood surface. We recommend using a semi or solid color stain to create a darker hue on the surface, such as our RockSolid 2x Solid Stain: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-RockSolid-5-gal-Redwood-Exterior-2X-Solid-Stain-319835/307428303 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

I used Wolman F&P on my dog-eared redwood plank fence 5 years ago. I haven't had to re-apply at all. The home is in Corona Ca. and has done well in all types of weather. It still beads water! I'm re-applying this year in the spring to give the fence an even more striking appearance. For the 125 bucks, a backpack sprayer and a hotdog roller, time and money well-spent. Thanks Wolman and HD.

Really like the color of this stain and like any water base stain it needs to be reapplied every couple yrs. I've used this on siding and decks, goes on well with sprayer.
