Thank you for your interest in our Wright Products VH440SB door closer. It only installs on the push/outswing side of the door and the jamb bracket must be installed as directed to achieve a 90 degree opening.

What's the difference between hydraulic and pneumatic?

A hydraulic closer has viscous fluid acting to slow the speed the door closes. A pneumatic uses a small hole that slows the passage of air between two ends of a tube, slowing the speed the door closes. The down side of hydraulic is that it can leak if the product very old or of poor initial construction. I bought this closer and the fluid leaded out immediately. See Pic. Beware...

Screen Door closes slow, then slams shut. Is there any adjustment to stop the slamming?

I found that moving the adjuster holes made some difference. I tried the screen and glass holes but found that the "screen" hole worked better than the glass hole and we have glass doors (Double Doors). There is still a little push at the end but the screen hole overcomes most of the slam.

Once I installed this closer, it worked fine--apart from taking about 30 seconds to close the door. So I adjusted it for faster closing. The instructions say rotate the tube body. Upon half a rotation, all the hydraulic fluid gushed out the "door" end of the tube onto my walkway and threshold. Now I have a mess and a door that still slams shut. At the least, opting for this product is a crapshoot. If my failed catastrophically right out of the packege, yours could also.

Upon conveying a message to the review section at an earlier time regarding 'leaking hydraulic fluid', Hampton Products did provide a replacement at no cost. The personnel were very friendly, courteous and most efficient in assisting me. I did install the Wright door closer and it is much better with the door not slamming. I used the screen hole instead of the glass hole on the forward part of the rod. This seemed to work more efficiently as opposed to using the 'screen' hole. Our doors have glass inserted but the glass can be removed for screens. After trying both holes (screen and glass), I found the former to be more capable of closing smoother (slight difference). In addition to this, I stretched the rod about 1/4" to tighten the hydraulic rod in unison with the provided bracket. Again, this worked more efficiently than just the standard application. Only a one (1") turn of the adjuster is all one needs to properly adjust the pressure of the hydraulic rod for movement( either fast or slow). A very good door closer that works as it should. We wish to thank Hampton Products, along with the staff and personnel. Thank you very much Brenda and Nicole.
