Q:It says it is ductile iron but some people say in the Q &A say it is forged steel. Am hoping the manufacturer can clarify this. Thanks

Answer This Question

A:  Here is a link to the manufacturer's website that will clarify the construction. https://yostvises.com/products/adi-5-5-austempered-ductile-iron-adi-bench-vise

A:  Yost replaced their forged FSV line with this cast ductile ADI line. At both this website and other large online retailers they just re-used the old FSV listing and updated the title and description with the new ADI vise specifics.

A:  FSV-6 (Forged Steel Vise) is made in Taiwan while supplies last. The next version will be renamed as ADI-6 and is made in China. ADI-6 is a vast improvement over the FSV-6 vise as FSV series needed to be welded together whereas the ADI series is a continuous casting, thus much stronger. Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) is equal to if not stronger than forged steel and meets ASTM A897, Grade 900, 90,000 psi tensile strength. Orders placed for ADI-6 on Home Depot as of 11/13/2018 will receive ADI-6 vise. The specifications (Jaw Width, Jaw Opening, Throat Depth and Pipe Capacity) all remain the same. The only changes are: COO = China, material of construction and improved clamping force.

                Fantastic Heavy Duty Vise
The ADI-6 vise is much better than I thought it would be. I’ve had another professional vise in the garage but I built a workbench in the basement and ordered this particular model and it is fantastic. Solid, around 44 pounds, heavier than specs. Easy to rotate, different than other reviews, maybe those vise owners don’t know how to loosen or maybe they’ve never owned a vise before? Who knows who knows but this is a great vise, period. big thanks to Home Depot for getting it for me, Thank You! tracking and delivery was great thank you! Worth the price! I am 70, been around a lot of tools I’m no amateur, been around professional master engineers and I’m sure they would feel the same it’s a great vise for a great low price!

This is a good solid vise. It looked even better mounted on my 46” Husky tool chest.

This Vise is high quality, from looks to build & strength....it's forged steel, which is MUCH stronger than any cast vises!!!.....swivels 360°.....has lock downs on both sides, removable pipe jaws....on mine, the vise jaws held the corner of A SINGLE PIECE OF PAPER, all the way across, even with just lightly closing them!!....& the lifetime warranty speaks volumes!!!.....Go online & Google this same model but in the Yost 6" version....there's a video of a welder that mounts it on the back of his work truck.....WOW!!!....it's pretty amazing!!!.....Hope this helps.....Thanks & God bless.

What a great vise! I went with the forged steel vise because of the strength. Cast iron vises just don't have the tensile strength to withstand high clamp pressures. They break. This vise is steel and is welded and machined to precision. And with Yost's lifetime warranty, i don't have to worry about a thing. I had a small issue with my vise and instead of returning it to HD i emailed Yost directly, and within a day was speaking with a member of their team. Yost is a family owned AMERICAN company that stands behind their products. They made sure i was satisfied and went above and beyond to make sure i had what i needed. If you are like me and want to spend a little extra of my hard earned dollars to get a quality tool, go with the Yost line of vises, you wont be disappointed. Thank you Yost for supplying me with hands down the best customer service i may very well have EVER received. You have a customer for life.

                      I like it
I'm pretty picky, especially when the item is a pricey. This one is the Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) version they have apparently changed over to from the previous forged steel model, which was welded construction.. This one is a solid one piece casting. If it really is Austemepered Cast Iron, it is really strong. The Yost site describes this vise as 130,000 psi tensile strength. Regular grey cast iron is 30,000 psi. Regular Ductie cast iron is 60,000 psi. They also say this is 45% stronger than the Yost FSV (forged steel) series that this one replaced. Weight 27 lbs supposedly. Didn't feel that heavy to me. The description says it is powder coated. If it is, it is the worst example of powder coating I have ever seen. While I was getting mine ready to mount, I knocked it over and fell about a foot onto concrete, it knocked a couple big red chips of "powder coat" off one jaw. Looks to me like a poor paint job. Previous reviewer mentioned the swivel base is cumbersome. It is, because it has a toothed base internally and you have to loosen the two lock down bolts a lot for it to rotate. Not a show stopper if you are not going to be rotating it constatntly. It has two adjustment set screws on the side to help you fine-tune how the moving jaw rides in the channel, and I used them to make the jaws line up a bit better. I hate a vise where the jaws down't close square with each other. Minewas not real bad, but I was able to improve it where it is pretty good amd acceptable to me. One jaw end still does initially touch the opposing jaw just a tiny bit early, but when I t tighten it down, it does so square. It moves in and out without a lot of slop like cheap vises do. I took it apart to lube with good grease. It had been greased, but not enough to suit me. Other than the poor paint job, I am liking it and would receommend it.. If you want perfection, go buy a US made Wilton, but expect to pay a LOT more.

The tightening and loosening is smooth but the rotation of the vise is terrible. I’d spend more money on a better unit next time
