Questions & Answers

Can I used this on previously stained/finished wood trim? If so, do I need to sand it first? Can it be used as a final topcoat? Thanks!

Asked by: needafloor
You can use clear shellac over previously finished wood trim. And it can be used as a final top coat. In most cases you do not need to sand first but you may want to if the trim needs to be cleaned up. aware that shellac will not withstand water very well and it is not as durable as some other finishes. But it will look good in a place where it won't get wet or wear.

Does the clear contain wax.jacke

Asked by: JackW
Zinsser clear shellac contains a small amount of wax but not enough to be a problem. You hear a lot about using dewaxed shellac under other finishes. I've done a lot of reading and a lot of experimenting myself over several years and my opinion is that it's not necessary. I use clear shellac under paint, polyurethane and lacquer. If I am going to apply an oil finish I generally do not use shellac or I dilute the shellac with denatured alcohol first.

I'm looking for a redwood stain for a deck... how much do it cost for a 5 gal bucket

Asked by: Pop
It sounds to us like Wolman F&P Finish and Preservative in a redwood finish is just what you are looking for. This deep-penetrating, tinted oil brings out wood’s natural grain while also providing long-term water, UV, and mold/mildew protection. The cost for a 5-gallon bucket is $129.97. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Wolman-5-gal-F-P-Redwood-Exterior-Wood-Stain-Finish-and-Preservative-14405/204642356

Customer Reviews

1-qt. Clear Shellac Traditional Finish and Sealer (Case of 4) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 77.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love This Stuff I have used polyurethane varnish for many years on most projects. I recently remodeled a bathroom and wanted to try something different. The scoop on shellac has it as more water-resistant than polyurethane, so I decided to give it a try. This stuff goes on easily, and it has less of a tendency to drip than polyurethane. I presume that;s because it dries faster, which means you have to work a little faster -- not much faster, but noticeably so. The nice thing about it is that, if there's an imperfection in your work, a little wipe-down with denatured alcohol smooths it out and you simply recoat it. Easy. Of course, alcohol will work it's "magic" on shellac whether you want it to or not, so it's probably not a good finish for a cocktail table or bar. Again, if accidents happen, spot repairs can be done with shellac much more easily than with varnish. One more thing I like: two coats will give a nice, glossy finish. After mine cured, a quick, VERY light once-over with some 0000 steel wool brought the gloss down to match woodwork in adjoining rooms. Very happy with the result. BONUS: Natural, non-toxic when dried.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for experienced user Shellac is a protective primer and finish for interior wood surfaces. For a perfect finish you need a minimum of two preferably three ore more coats with drying time in-between and slight sanding in- between the applications. The lacquering has to be well prepared and done very fast because of the quick drying time. The product is not for outside or weathered wood surfaces and also NOT for wet areas like wood floors, tables or working areas which come in contact with water. The preferred use for interior surfaces should be clearly printed on the front of the can because the work for a pro finish surface is immense and the limited use must be visible and not be hidden in the small printed text on the back of the can.

Downsides are the finish is not good for wet areas (leaves white spots) and the can has a shelf life of around 6 months to a year. Old Shellac does not dry smooth, it will dry with wrinkles to the finish. So only buy what you will use up.

The surface can easily be sanded before you paint, which helps for a smooth finish. And you use less paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to apply and fast drying. Many coats a day a plus. Have used this Shellac on several projects in the past and like the fast drying time and protection it gives the wood. The fact that it dries clear is a plus too, especially when working with fancy wood grains. The wood tones really come through great.
