how long before can paint over primer?

Asked by ron May 2, 2021
1
Answer

Happy to help Ron! Zinsser Cover Stain Oil Base Primer will dry to the touch in 30 minutes and can be recoated or top coated after 1 hour. The dry primer film develops full adhesion in 7 days. Lower temperatures, higher humidity and the addition of tint will prolong the dry and cure time. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Will this product block sap from larch wood from coming through to the surface?

Asked by David February 15, 2021

Answer

Happy to help, David! While Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer is great for blocking tannin bleed on bare wood, we recommend spot priming sap streaks with Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer and Sealer first. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-1-qt-B-I-N-Shellac-Based-White-Interior-Primer-and-Sealer-00904/100398380 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Beehives! I need the best option for a top coat with this primer so get creative.

Asked by Lonnie December 31, 2020

Answers

Thank you for reaching out, Lonnie! To ensure full durability on exterior surfaces, we recommend topcoating Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer and Sealer with a suitable exterior-grade opaque coating. We recommend topcoating within a week to ensure full adhesion of the new coat. Please keep in mind, the elements and surface condition will dictate how often a coating will need to be touched up or recoated. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

We are looking to have new unfinished MDF cabinet doors wrapped (glued vinyl) and I was wondering...

Actually, letting the glue get "sucked into" the MDF is exactly what you want. The bond will be more positive than if you applied the glue to the primer. Use a short napped roller on both surfaces and allow to dry to the touch, then carefully apply your vinyl. I've attached a video that - while not vinyl per se, will show you one way its done. There are others that use thin sticks between the 2 layers which, when everything is lined up, are removed one at a time. The most important thing to remember is that once it's down it's almost impossible to reposition.

Do you have to sand paneling before applying this product?

Asked by Eric October 3, 2020

Answers

Sanding is always a good idea if only to at least remove any loose paint or smooth out any uneven grain, but if what you are working with is fairly clean and not flaking, just roll or brush (or both) this stuff on. Remember, when choosing this product, clean-up may be a deal breaker unless you're using throw-away brushes and roller covers. Nothing works quite as good as this, but there are water-based products by Zinsser that are water clean-up and don't smell as strong.

Will this product cover 30 year old non-textured wallpaper?

Asked by Bon May 15, 2020

Answers

Thank you for reaching out! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer is suitable for use over wallpaper. However, to ensure the best finish for your new paint, we do recommend removing existing wallpaper. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can it be used on exterior steel door

Asked by Rich April 18, 2020

Yes. Give the current finish a light sanding after cleaning and sanding any rust to bare metal. This will insure a good bond.

Would this primer be best as prep to paint for new unfinished exterior grey concrete block wall?

Asked by Jason April 15, 2020

Answers

That would definitely be a great primer for sealing block. I would recommend two coats. One of the main reasons I use zinsser it can be used on practically anything.

Can this be used on an interior door

Asked by Vin October 10, 2019

Answers

We like the way you think, Vin! Yes, Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer is suitable for use on interior surfaces that have been previously finished. You will want to ensure the surface is clean, dry and in good, sound condition. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Could it work on wallpaper?

Asked by phil September 2, 2019

Answers

We appreciate your interest, Phil. Rust-Oleum Zinsser CoverStain Primer can be used on new or previously painted drywall, cured plaster, cement-based coatings, wood, metal, vinyl, PVC, and masonry (including stucco, concrete block, poured concrete, and brick). However, this product will not be able to adhere to wallpaper well. Instead, we recommend using Rust-Oleum Zinsser Gardz Primer over the wallpaper to seal it. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-GARDZ-1-gal-Clear-Water-Based-Interior-Problem-Surface-Sealer-4-Pack-2301/202596339 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Painting over douglas fir siding that had not been painted in 20 years this primer saved a lot of money caused a lot sweat but its worth it looking at the finished product. The primer sealed the wood and helped paint suckin in to the untreated wood. Will last a long time and look good for ever. Great Product.

Worked great in our older home to cover high sheen oil based paints. We sanded and filled all the holes we found, but the old paint was so bad that it kept coming off as we sanded. This primer stuck to the old paint as a nice thick layer. Only downside to this primer is its very thick, smells AWFUL, stinks up the entire house for days as it cures. Make a back up plan to stay with friends and keep area well ventilated due to high VOC smell. It took about 3-4 days for the smell to go away fully with windows vented. Overall very satisfied with this product, have used it in the past with water based paint to cover it, works very well and a great overall result for many years to come.

This is my favorite primer of the several brands we've used. We have moved into another house and my wife didn't like the ugly color on two of the wooden vanities. A very light once-over with fine sandpaper and a coat of this Zinsser primer and it was ready for a new color of latex paint. Both turned out great. This house also has a large basement and the original owner built, but never painted, a number of large wooden shelves which he immediately stacked old oily/greasy car parts and Lord knows what else on. I just wiped them off and used Zinsser primer before using a tough latex paint to cover them. The primer and paint have stuck to the wooden shelves very well. This stuff works.

I added an addition to my home in 2004 and had to remove a window which was plastered over in the process. I used a K!(Z latex primer after letting the plaster dry for 3 months the top coated it with latex paint. Two weeks later the paint pealed off. I put a painting over it. 13 years later I decided to redo the wall and striped it by pealing sheets of paint off the plastered area and reapplying the K!(Z. The next day it pealed off just like before and I striped the wall again. After researching everything I found Zinsser Cover Stain as being the recommended oil sealer and next price point higher and tried it. It applied easily and was tested after 24 hours drying time and IT STUCK!!!! I sealed the wall and next day resurfaced it to remove gouges made from removing the previous primer coats and on the third day gave it a second coat of the Cover Stain. WOW, what a nice looking wall now. It was a lot of work but very well satisfied with this product so far. If it fails during my life time which I hope last several more years I will certainly post another review.

Used it to coat over my OSB walls. Rolled it on and it did a great job of covering. Haven't painted over it yet but looks like it will be easy and may be able to do it in one coat. It's for my wood shop so two coats probably not necessary.

Needed to cover semi-gloss oil based trim paint and this primer is wonderful! Every how-to review i found said it had to be sanded and then primed before it could be repainted with laytex. This product eliminated the need for sanding - what a mess and time saver! Couldn't be more pleased!
