        Answer This Question

A:  Yes, we did in a shed.  We had it running constantly though and it stopped after a few months (pulling humidity out of space). It’s a bit noisy.

Quietly does what its supposed to do.
Great fan. I was a bit concerned about noise, but the only way I know it is running is to look in the attic or go outside and look. I installed a thermostat to control the fan operation so it isn't running 24/7. Comes with the louvered vent which is a plus. I did have to tweek the top louver because it didn't close flush like the other 2 did, but not a big issue. I installed a sub floor in the attic and this fan helps to keep that area a little cooler for the articles stored there. Also helps to keep the house a little cooler by drawing off some of the heat that might radiate down into the living space. Multiple sizes available, so match the size fan to the area you want vented. So far no complaints.

The fan real capacity at high speed is less that 500 cfm
I bought this fan two years ago. From the beginning its capacity was much lower than 1750 cfm. As a mechanical engineer I was able to measure its air change in my garage and my measurement showed around 400-500 cfm capacity. I had to fix its shuttle all the the time open to get this 500 cfm. I have make up air louver in the garage. During the past two years, its speed became slow and slower and then stopped. Now I have to throw away this fan. It seems there is not any quality control of this product.

This fan changed our lives! We live in a converted loft and have bad airflow. This fan pulls in the air and cools our loft down. Multiple speeds. Not very loud.

I purchased this exhaust fan to vent smoke from soldering electronics and chemical fumes when etching printed circuit boards. Mounted about 2 feet above my workbench, it does a pretty darn good job at sucking it all out before it can get in my face. That said, the shutters simply aren't heavy enough to fully close on their own, and anything more than a slight breeze gets them flapping open and shut pretty good. As you can see in the picture, it stays about 1/4" - 3/8" open at all times. For an attic vent or the like, it's probably not a big deal, but the clacking sound it makes is loud enough to be very annoying when it's right above your workbench. Another reviewer mentioned that they used some small magnets to keep it shut when it wasn't in use, but the shutter flaps themselves aren't attracted to magnets and I couldn't find a position on the steel connecting bar between them that'd hold them shut reliably while still opening when the fan was turned on. Maybe if you played around with different sizes and strengths. I feel like they could have solved this problem by making the flaps a little heavier or by putting in a magnetic closure.

This is iLIVING’s 18”, louvered, variable speed, exhaust fan. The hardest part of the installation was figuring out how to mount it (the manual gives all the dimensions you need, but doesn’t really help you with installation ideas). I’m using the fan in my garage to exhaust saw dust (from my shop) and hot air in the summer months. I found a nice spot in the gable—the space between the studs was just right, and the studs are installed on the flat. However, I have 9/16” sheetrock on both the interior and exterior of the wall (fire wall). If I cut a square hole and mount the fan from the inside (on to the studs), it does not protrude all the way through the wall, so I’d have the raw edges of the siding and sheetrock exposed on the outside, which I would have to seal. The next option would be to cut a round hole and mount the fan from the outside. This turned out to be not such a good idea—I’d have to cut through the studs. What I finally came up with was to separate the fan from the louvered frame (easily unscrews) and mount the fan on the inside and the louvers on the outside. Then I can easily trim and caulk the louvers for a water-tight installation. This worked out great outside (see photos 1 and 2). Then I added a power cord, wired in a receptacle with a variable speed control and it’s done. The fan itself works great at all speeds. It’s particularly quiet, and draws a lot of air—I can feel the air flow with the garage door open. My man-door tends to close by itself, but with the fan on and the garage door closed, the flow of air causes it to stay open about 8 inches—great indicator of how much air is being moved by the fan.
