A: You would need 2x6's minimum, with cross bracing. 16 inch on center.

A: I think if you tripled them up and made a built up 3 ply beam and had minimum 4 of those 3 ply beams they may work. But you really should contact a licensed contractor and / or your local building inspector to make sure you're building to safety and to code. You don't want anyone getting injured or potential lawsuit, due to a construction flaw.

A: probably but I personally would use pressure treated 4x4s or 8x8s should hold up better under stress 2x6s for frame.

A: Pressure treated lumber is a much better choice. Whitewood will rot and attract wood-boring insects much more quickly, especially if installed near soil. If whitewood has to be replaced in 5 years in an outdoor application, and treated lumber will last 20 years but costs 20% more, which one actually costs less?

A: Yes, being aware cedar might last longer, whether sealed or not. Also be aware treated lumber is good/required for ground contact, but may not be best for decking to be walked on by bare feet due to hazardous chemicals.

A: Hi Brittany
Yes this is natural kiln-dried wood lumber with no preservatives or additives.
However any contact with soil will eventually cause the wood to rot but that would take quite some time and actually create a more organic soil. Good Luck with your project. BRANDERS

A: It could be used to make a garden bed but remember its not pressure treated and will not last as long unless you use a water type seal on it.

A: It's been a while since your question, but I'm still answering to help others doing research in the future. In general, you should use pressure treated lumber for any outdoor application, because it will resist rot and insect damage much longer. In a gardening application, if you want to avoid pressure treated chemicals (which are now significantly less bad than the older versions of pressure treated), you should consider using wood that is naturally more rot and insect resistant than pine. Black locust, oak, walnut are just a few examples of better-than-pine choices for outdoor applications, although you'll need to spend a lot more and find a local mill to get the best prices. Whitewood pine will work, but it won't last very long. As it rots it will turn into good soil though. I would speculate 3-5 years of useful life in white pine with ground contact. 15 years for modern treated lumber. 15-20 years for oak or walnut, and 25-40 years for black locust.

A: no. I would not use this to replace deck boards. You need an outdoor wood for that.

A: DR it would more than adequate but it's primary use is for framing construction. Home Depot has a wide selection of decking products that would be more suitable for a top of deck application.
