Q:What size drill bit should I be using to make pilot holes for screws? Also, I am installing on 4x4 wood posts. How far from the top of the post should I be installing the brackets? I'm thinking this would be sturdier if I install not at the very top?

Q:Hi. I cannot find an answer to this question anywhere online. I was hoping that the Ratchet kit would explain it, but it does not. And your answer to my previous question did not answer it. How do you attach the opposite corner of the shade sail, the corner without the ratchet, to a length of the cable wire? You have the D ring on the corner of the shade sail through the looped end of the cable wire, and then, how to you attach the free end of the cable wire to something, an eye bolt or some other gadget, at the right distance? (I can't be the only person not to understand this, can I?) Thank you.

A: Correction to the above answer. The cable is 1/8", not 3/8 ". So the cable grip you need is also 1/8". Sorry for my mistake.

A: I was finally able to answer my own question by reading through the comments of users of other shade sail attachment kits. The answer is that on the side that you are not using a ratchet device, you run the cable wire through the corner ring of the shade sail and through the loop at the end of the cable on one end, and you run the cut end through a device called a cable grip and then through the eye bolt on the attachement point. Then you run the cut end back through that little cable grip and tighten the two tiny nuts to grip them together so the cut end can't slip out. This is a tiny little U shaped device with two screws and two nuts which clamps down on the two lengths of cable so they can't slip apart. It costs a few cents apiece and SHOULD have been included in this kit. If you are using 3/8" inch cable (which this is), then you need a 3/8" cable grip. Maybe everyone else in the world knew this already, but I did not. And it was quite annoying to have to research to learn it and then go out and find the right device.

A: Hi Renoel, good question. You're gonna want to loop the cable wire through the shade sail corner and then loop one of the looped ends through the other, pulling all the way. On the other end, you'll have a free looped end through which the accompanying carabiner will fit through. The carabiner will serve as the link between the cable wire and the pad-eye.

Q:Do I need to buy two of these kits to install one 14' square shade sail? If not, how do I attach the opposite end? All ends will need to be extended by cable or something similar.

A: Hi Renoel, good question! You'll only need one of these kits. The four attachment points are: 2 pad eyes and 2 ratchet winches. Four 12' cable wires come with the kit for extension.

A: I installed a 16x20 with one kit. The cables included are of high quality and all you need to extend the ends of the sail.

A: Good question Harry! Slip the ratchet winch into the wall mount sleeve and screw into your mounting surface. Repeat to create two mounting points. Screw in the two pad eyes for a total of four mounting points. Cut one of the looped ends off to make the extension wire rope one foot longer than the distance between your mounting point and shade sail. Loop the extension wire rope through your shade sail corner and then loop the cut end through the looped end, pulling all the way. Loop the cut end in and out of the holes of the ratchet winch (refer to bottom left of last picture). Tension the ratchet winch accordingly with the provided wrench. If you find that there is too much excess wire rope, consider further reducing the length by shortening the already cut end. Connecting the pad eyes with your remaining shade sail corners can be done either with the carabiners or the remaining wire ropes.
