Q:I don’t see the ASTM rating for this product. Is it okay to use on shower walls? Also, can I use Redguard with it?

Answer This Question

A:  Look in the Technical Specs for the ASTM rating, it is there. you CAN use RedGuard, but why would you? You'd only need to use RG at the seams and to cover the screws, if you choose to. Tech specs at: https://www.buildgp.com/product/densshield-tile-backer/ there's a PDF with all the info you need.

      Answer This Question

A:  The definition states for ceramic tile. It doesn't exclude porcelain tile. I think it mentions ceramic tile because it is far more commonly used than porcelain.

A:  You can use porcelain tiles on Dens-Shield.

Q:I'm putting in tile in a shower, around a tub and bathroom floor. For my walls, can I attach this directly to the studs? Or does it need to go over drywall?

A:  Just use a bit of thinset to fill the screw holes and fill your joints. No membrane needed, it's got a moisture barrier built in.

A:  Are you asking if yo u should apply RedGard or a similar product on top of DensShield? if so, the answer is no, you do not need to paint anything on top of it before tiling. You do need to use fiberglass tape at the seams, and use thinset or RedGard to affix it. Check out the Installation manual at https://www.buildgp.com/product/densshield-tile-backer/

A:  Try your local Lowes. You'll probably only get the smaller sheet (roughly 4x5), but at least you can get it. I live in a major metropolitan area (Philadelphia) and the nearest seller other than Lowes is 47 miles away in Armpit, NJ or some other fanciful hamlet.

Q:Can this product be painted and finished like regular drywall? For example, in a tub surround, can I use this product for the entire surround (up to the ceiling), while tiling up to the shower head and painting the remainder above the tile?

A:  In non-tile areas as you describe, apply a 2" wide fiberglass mesh tape to any joints and skim the surface with a setting type compound to achieve a smooth and paintable finish. Consult the paint department for their recommended paint finish in this type of area.
