Q:Can this be used as a service disconnect for a sub panel? If so, is the ground and neutral unbounded?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello Shawn, BR24L70RP does not come bonded for service entrance from the factory. If this panel is being used as a sub panel then the ground and neutral will be unbonded. Regards, Eaton.

Q:I got a sub panel thinking that I could just use the breakers as disconnects but the code inspector says I need a service disconnect to the sub panel in the greenhouse as well. The breakers in the sub for the circuits aren’t good enough.

      Answer This Question

A:  I assume this is going outside the greenhouse and feeding an interior load center. If that is the case, the answer is yes. The device is NEMA 3R rated (outdoor) up to 70 AMP 120/240 VAC single phase. It is two pole and will accept up to a pair; of full size single circuit breakers (two circuits) or tandem circuit breakers (four circuits). Service disconnect typically refers to the switch or circuit breaker that turns off power directly after the meter. The device is also suitable as a single phase service disconnect following a single 4 jaw meter socket such as a B-Line 924.

A:  Everything being equal, such as Wire size, properly installed outlets. lights etc Ya you can use as a disconnect. Your Code Inspector should have explained it to you. Each State, City, Town has its own Electrical Codes

Q:Could you please recommend a surge protector model number to match this panel?

          Answer This Question

A:  Hey BA36212 There are many surge devices that nipple into the knockouts of the load center. This solution will broaden your options over an "exact replacement". One would be the Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA-1. It will protect whole house. Another would be the Eaton CHSPT22PACK. This will offer protection to cable connected devices as well. These devices are offered as: Micro (Good), Max (Better) and Ultra (Best) series levels. Here is the Eaton Surge Protection link to learn more about product and installation: https://www.eaton.com/Eaton/ProductsServices/Electrical/ProductsandServices/Residential/SurgeProtection/index.htm The Ultra models are offered on the Home Depot site.

Q:There is no ground bar in this sub panel how do you install one
          by|Jan 12, 2019

          Answer This Question

A:  Hello Elizabeth. First, it depends where you are using the load center. If it is being used as the main (or service disconnect) you don't need one for the three wire service. Use the provided Eaton BSSUSE “main bonding jumper” to “bond” the enclosure to the neutral bar between a pre drilled hole in the steel and a hole in the neutral bar. -OR- If using it as a 4 wire sub panel then an Eaton GBK10 should have enough space for this size panel. It will accept: (3) #14–#10 Cu/Al or (1) #14–#4 Cu/Al wires in each hole. If the grounding wire in the feeder is larger than #4 get the GBK1020. It has one lug on it that accepts: (1) #6–2/0 Cu/Al wire. There are pre drilled holes in the back of the enclosure that will line up with the holes in the grounding bar. There are self tapping screws supplied and listed for the use to meet code for thread contact. Try your best to screw them in straight. Please see attached photos off the Home Depot site of the products mentioned. The ground bars come in 5, 10, 14 and 21 hole configurations and all have the 1 3/4" distance between mounting holes.

A:  On the box it says to use hub DS_H1. Put the size of hub you need where the blank space is. A DS075H1CS is a 3/4" hub denoted by the 075 and the CS on the end just means clam shell packaging. So a 1 inch hub would be DS100H1 without the clam shell packaging. A 2" hub in clam shell packaging would be a DS200H2CS. CS or clam shell is just the plastic shipping package the unit is wrapped in.

A:  Hello 72ridgerunner, Yes, you will need to back feed a branch breaker and install a hold down kit to secure it. Regards, Eaton

            by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes you can 72ridgerunner. This is a MLO main lug only panel which means to use it as "service suitable" you will have to backfeed a main breaker. To do so and meet code; 1, The main breaker shall have a breaker retainer kit BREQS125 to prevent inadvertent removal. note; The breaker should have a hole in it from front to back for the tie down screw eg: Model # BR2100CS 2, Tie the neutral bar to the metal of the panel with the provided MBJ main bonding jumper. That will leave you with basically a 6-12 manel with main. None of this applies if used as a sub panel. Another suggestion would be TSM1610CSCUP meter socket load center. Always check with your power company for requirements first.

A:  No you don't. But be sure to put in the main bonding jumper provided. That is the strap that ties the neutral bar to the metal box when used as main box. Here is a handy rule to save 52 pages of code: After the main disconnect the neutral and ground conductore shall never touch again. Hence the reason for 4 wire range hookups, sub panels, etc.

A:  Hello AtHomeDepot, This box is suitable for use as service equipment when a main breaker is used or when not more than six service disconnecting mains are provided. If you are not using this panel as your service entrance, then yes you will have to purchase a ground bar. The appropriate ground bar is GBK10, SKU 196783. Regards, Eaton

                  by|May 5, 2023

A:  HEY AtHomeDepot! As a main/only that would be a NO. Use the Main Bonding Jumper provided to tie the neutral bar to the metal of the panel enclosure. You will have a 1 phase 3 wire service. TIP: This next sentence will save 52 pages of code: The grounding (earth) and grounded (neutral) conductors SHALL NEVER TOUCH AGAIN past the main disconnect panel. eg. 4 wire sub panels and range outlet.
