Q:I want to cover two windows 42" each. I want to buy 4 panels and use a rod I can open & close with a cord. I want to cover the wall approximately 12" beyond the window edge.

A curtain panel measures 42" wide, with 2 panels on a window they would cover 84". Two panels should be sufficient to cover your 42" window plus 12" on either side.
