A:  I don’t think they are good for a front door. I used them for closet pull out doors on the top of the doors so they catch closed.

A:  Yes, this adjustable ball catch can be installed in a hollow door. There is typically 1-1/4 inch of solid wood at the top and bottom of the hollow care door to drill into.

                  Answer This Question

A:  Approximately 2-1/4" x 1-1/4" with a ball latch on strike plate and 1" cylinder.

                  by|Apr 23, 2022

A:  I'm not able to measure. But the cylinder would screw in about 1-2 turns, and then it stopped and there was no way to grip it to screw it further in. I tried needle nose pliers but no real grip and worried I would damage the grooves and never get it back out. I'm either going to do without the broken catch or look for something that replaces the bronze and ball component only.

                    A:  The dimensions of the faceplate are 1.37" W x 2.12" D.

A:  The dimensions for the strike plate and cylinder for this product are: 1 inch width, 2 inch length, .028 depth, and .3 oz weight.

Q:The cylinder of the ball catch is adjustable, but loose. Still turns when mounted. Over time, I expect it to loosen and fall into the door cavity. How do I tighten it? Teflon tape??

                        Answer This Question

A:  We suggest adjusting the position of the plate and cylinder before mounted. Once mounted, the door will only hit the ball vertically, the cylinder itself should not fall into the door cavity since there is a spring supporting the ball.

A:  Yes, the spring is internal to the tube that the ball seats in. There is a plastic plug at the bottom to hold the ball and spring in place. The spring travel and tension is fixed in the tube so you adjust the catch by screwing the tube up or down in the mounting plate to properly engage the strike plate above. Hope this is helpful.

                                  Answer This Question

A:  Yes, that is the primary location for mounting this ball catch. Drill a hole into the top of the door deep enough to accommodate the cylinder and mount the plate on the top of the door. Depending upon you skill and the amount of clearance between the door frame and the door, you may want to mortise the mounting plate too. The strike plate is aligned to the door frame and centered on the ball. Hope this is helpful.

A:  No, but the cost of both items is reasonable. And it'd make sense to replace both items instead of trying save. I don't know if this would qualify for 'pennywise and pound foolish' but the perceived savings is just few bucks. Hope this helps. Good luck.

A:  Yes. Once you have the ball properly adjusted, put a drop of Locktite or glue on the cylinder threads and mounting plate then let it dry. The glue will hold the cylinder in place but not so much that it can't be adjusted later if needed. Hope this is helpful.
