Q:I plan to plant these on a straight line to create a green privacy barrier. what is the recommended distance apart that I should plant them?

Answer This Question

A:  These don’t get very wide, 2-3’ at maturity. 18” spacing trunk to trunk might do the trick for a hedge.  If you’ve got a little more room to spare, I’d consider Steeds holly, it’s a better screening plant which is a little wider at the base but easy to shape into a dense hedge.

A:  Not for sure .... they get 2-3 feet wide at maturity. So, I would say no more than 3 ft max. Hope this helps.

A:  For creating a straight-line green privacy barrier with Sky Pencil Holly shrubs (Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil'), spacing them about 2 to 3 feet apart is recommended. This relatively close spacing allows the hollies to grow and fill in, forming a dense and visually appealing screen. Be sure to consider the mature width of the hollies and the specific aesthetic and privacy goals for your landscape when determining the exact spacing.

A:  I would say no closer than 24”.  One thing to note, these will not provide privacy for probably a good five years.  If you’re looking for something in the same family, I would go with Arborvitae’s. JMO.

A:  Unfortunately no you have to wait until early spring when there is no longer any chance of freezing.

A:  it is best to plant at the beginning of growing. Growing season start in spring.

                      by|Dec 25, 2021

A:  I wouldn’t risk it. My suggestion would be to wait until early spring when freezing is no longer a threat. That will allow time for the plants to acclimate to the NY climate prior to the first freeze especially since this are grown and shipped from AL.  Also, I would double check your growing zone. These won’t grow well in parts of NY state and may need extra protection during NY winters.

A:  It’s too late at this point to plant this in NY.  Although a hearty plant….late fall is the latest I would plant this in the Northeast.

A:  The weather is not ideal to plant at this time, I would suggest April 1st.
