Q:can a 3 1/2 inch flatboard be ripped to form two 1 5x8 pieces for a curved jamb?

Answer This Question

A:  Regarding your question, you could take standard 1x4 and rip it down to 1-5/8" wide. With that being said, we have an actual mold for 11/16 x 1-5/8" flat stock and we could modify a different mold to make pieces that are 3/4" x 1-5/8 (we have over 40,000 profiles and only a TINY portion are shown on HD's website). Please let me know any questions/comments or if i can be of any further assistance. Best regards, Greg Carter - Flex Trim (greg@carterflex.com, direct - 336-242-1766)

Q:If I use this product as a window jamb (like a belt as mentioned in previous questions), how tight of a radius can this product bend? I have a porthole window that I need to trim out and the window is 13-3/4" in diameter.

    Answer This Question

A:  If the diameter is truly 13-3/4" (6-7/8" radius), I think a 3/4" thick profile is going to be too thick (the piece is going to want to "cup") and you would really need to go to a thinner profile just to be safe (we could still do 5-1/2" wide). In general, we have over 40,000 profiles (what is shown on HD's website is a tiny fraction of what we have available) and we can provide other lengths also (between 4 ft and 12 ft) but you would really need to contact me directly for me to point you in the right direction. Q:Is it 6 3/4 or 5 1/5 wide?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi John, Regarding your question, the profile name is HD1 x 6 and the net dimensions of the profile are 3/4" x 5-1/2". A couple other comments: 1) If you are bending the piece against the thinner (3/4) dimension, bending like base on a curved wall, a straight piece will work fine. 2) If you are bending in the other direction against the wider (5-1/2" dimension), like an arch over a doorway, we normally need to "pre-bend" the piece to the correct radius. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any further questions. Best regards, Greg Carter - Flex Trim (greg@carterflex.com, direct 336-242-1766)

Q:I have a bay window and would like to use this product to complete the baseboard beneath the window where the wall meets the floor. Would this product bend (4 bends) approx. 120 degrees each to conform to the wall?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Daniel, I hope you are doing well. Regarding your question, you mentioned that the product would bend approximately 120 degrees but I am honestly not sure what that means since the radius of a curve is specified in inches and not degrees. With that being said: 1) It might be helpful if you could send me a picture of your wall just so we are on the same page - and so I make sure to give you the correct response. 2) If you are bending a piece against the thinner dimension (like wrapping a best around your waist/base on a curved wall), a straight piece will generally work fine unless it is a super tight radius application like a "bullnose corner", very small column, etc. 3) If you are bending the piece against the wider dimension (like an arch/rainbow, half round, etc.), a straight piece would typically not work and we normally need to "pre-bend" those pieces to the correct radius. Hopefully the above is clear but please let me know any questions/comments. Best regards, Greg Carter - Flex Trim (greg@carterflex.com, direct - 336-242-1766)

Q:Can I heat the flex trim and bend it around an arched window myself, or, does it has to have a prebend?

          Answer This Question

A:  Hi Clay, Hope all is well. Regarding your question: 1) If you are bending the piece like a belt - i.e. against the thin dimension, straight pieces should work fine and the pieces don't need to be pre-bent. 2) If you are bending like a rainbow - i.e. against the wide dimension, the pieces would normally need to be "pre-bent" by us to the correct radius since this is a wide profile. If the application is an arch, we just need to know the width of the opening/window and the center rise. If the the application is a half circle/half round, we would need to know the diameter of the half circle. If the radius was not uniform all the way around the piece (like an oval or an elliptical), we would need a template. Please let me know any questions/comments. Best regards, Greg Carter - Flex Trim (greg@carterflex.com, direct line - 336-242-1766) Hopefully the above is clear but please let m

Q:I am looking to use this 1x4 FlexTrim product for an arch over three windows that total 8' wide. The top of the arch is 2' high. Will this product bend enough to cover that or will it need to be 'pre-bent'?

A:  Hi Tom, I hope you are doing well. Per your question above, i am assuming that the product is being used as casing (going on the wall), as opposed to jamb - which would just be straight pieces - and if that is correct, an arch that is 96" wide x 24" center rise comes up to 11 ft @ 60" radius and that radius is too small for straight pieces to work, and the pieces would need to be "pre-bent" by us to the correct radius. Please let me know any questions/comments or if i can be of any further assistance. Best regards, Greg Carter - Flex Trim (greg@carterflex.com, direct line 336-242-1766).

Q:I am looking at using this product as an exterior trim around a half circle window. I have installed 1x4 hardie trim around all the regular windows and am looking for a 1x4 trim that would flex around the arch of the half circle, The radius is 3 foot. Will this product flex to that or do I need to find something already curved to that dimension?

              Answer This Question

A:  Hi Mark, Hope all is well. Regarding your question, a straight piece is not going to bend to a 36" radius/72" diameter and the piece would definitely have to be "pre-bent" by us to the correct radius (you run in to the "laws of physics" at a certain point regarding how much a profile will bend if you are bending against the wide dimension. If you are just looking for "smooth" 1x4 (3/4" x 3-1/2" net dimensions), we actually stock that item in all the standard half round sizes (24" diameter - 72" diameter). We also have a mold for the Hardie "textured" 1x4 profile (3/4" x 3-1/2" net dimensions) but that item would have to be made. Please feel free to contact me directly if i can be of any further assistance. Best regards, Greg Carter - Flex Trim (greg@carterflex.com, direct - 336-242-1766)

                Answer This Question

A:  Hi - hope you are doing well. Regarding your question, any piece that we make can theoretically be painted or stained but if you were staining the piece, you would want it to have a "wood grain". The item that is sold on HD's website is a "paint grade" item (it has no "grain" in the piece) but we do have 1x6 profiles that have a wood grain (poplar, pine, oak, etc.). Our product is used all the time for applications that are being stained but i would really need for you to contact me outside of this portal so that i can provide additional information (there is a limited amount of information/characters that I can include here and it would be better if i could send you a more detailed e-mail, including some attachments/other details).
