A gap of up to 1" is considered normal, If you are using the 1" extension and the handle is too far out and the gap is over 1/2", you can install the 162 escutcheon extension if your current escutcheon plate is round and 7" in diameter. The 162 plate will go behind your current escutcheon to close the gap by 1/2". The valve body can also be moved behind the wall to correct the gap. Handle Extension Kit in Chrome is designed to extend the cartridge to handle connection an additional 2 inches for a Posi-temp rough-in valve installed too deep into the wall. A Posi-temp valve has a handle that rotates to turn the water on. If your handle pulls out to turn the water on this kit will not fit your valve. Handle Extension Kit in Chrome comes with a non-metallic cartridge stem extension piece and a non-metallic temperature limit stop key. These parts are not available in a metallic material. If you are experiencing difficulties with the handle stripping out one of these parts, you may need a replacement cartridge to make the handle turn smooth and easy.
