Q:My garage concrete floor has an old layer of gray paint that is well adhered. Can I paint this epoxy product right on top of it? Do I need to use the etching on an already painted surface?

Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Steve! Yes, Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Garage Floor Coating can be applied to previously coated surfaces that are in good, sound condition. While we do not recommend etching the previously coated surface, as it can damage the paint, you will either need to scuff sand with 60/80 grit sandpaper or prime with Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer to ensure full adhesion. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-1-gal-Concrete-and-Garage-Interior-Exterior-Recoat-Primer-338806/308295564 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:My garage floor was etched and painted with EpoxyShield Garage floor coating kit. A few sections have peeled down to bare concrete. Before re-coating with the Epoxyshield kit, do I re-etch, or just prime the whole floor even over the painted sections?

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Lucia! If the areas are smaller, then etching is not recommended as it may damage or loosen the surrounding coated areas. Instead, we recommend using a wire brush in the bare areas to rough it up a little and remove any loose coating. Make sure to thoroughly clean and degrease the floor prior to priming the whole surface and then recoating with Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Garage Floor Coating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

      Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Ken! Yes, Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Garage Floor Coating can be recoated with itself without needing to remove the previous coat. While etching is not needed or recommended, you will need to either scuff sand the floor with 60/80 grit sandpaper after 3 days, or prime with Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer to ensure full adhesion. Make sure the surface is clean and dry prior to priming or after sanding. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-1-gal-Concrete-and-Garage-Interior-Exterior-Recoat-Primer-338806/308295564 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

        Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help. While Rust-Oleum Epoxyshield Garage Floor Kit provides a durable floor finish, it can not be applied to wood. Instead, we recommend our Rust-Oleum Rocksolid Garage Floor Kit as it can be applied to wooden floor surfaces. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-RockSolid-180-oz-Black-Polycuramine-2-5-Car-Garage-Floor-Kit-318697/321712851 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Would you recommend this product on a concrete basement floor primarily to be used as bathroom including the shower area? How would I make out slip resistant?

          Answer This Question

A:  Happy to clear things up! While Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Garage Floor Coating can be used in basements and on bathroom floors, we do not recommend it for use in a shower or tub. The exposure to moisture and high humidity would cause it to blister and peel. At this time, we do not offer a concrete coating that can be used inside on a shower floor. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Can I use this in a car port covered concrete slab?

            Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Hunter. While your car port is covered Rust-Oleum Epoxyshield still can not be applied to covered outdoor surfaces. The wear from the elements and UV will cause the finish to fade and peel. Instead, we recommend Rust-Oleum Concrete & Garage Paint + Primer as it can be applied outdoor concrete surfaces. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-1-Gal-Battleship-Gray-Satin-1-Part-Epoxy-Concrete-Floor-Interior-Exterior-Paint-225380/203417055 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

              Answer This Question

A:  Happy to clear things up, Rick! With any coated surface, care should be taken when these areas are wet. If wanting to add more slip resistance, we recommend adding Rust-Oleum Anti-Skid Additive to your final coat. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-EpoxyShield-3-4-oz-Antiskid-Additive-Case-of-8-279847/203426238 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3
