Q:will it rust?
by|Apr 16, 2021

Answer This Question

A:  Since it is zinc plated, it should not rust unless the plating is compromised (i.e. nick or chip). Some years ago I bought some galvanized (zinc plated) nails that were so bad (chipped coating) that I had to return them. The zinc plating on this rod appears to be very well bonded.

A:  Hello Mike, ATR5/8X36ZP threaded rod has zinc plated finish which doesn't provide adequate corrosion resistance for exterior applications. It should only be used in interior dry conditions. Hope this helps. Regards.

A:  The ATR threaded rods are rated for axial tensile load only and the primary loading that this rod would see in the application you are requesting would be a bending and/or torsional action. What we can offer is to let you know that the ultimate tensile strength of these rods is 58,000 psi and the yield strength is 36,000 psi. From a tension standpoint, this particular threaded rod (5/8” diameter) has an allowable tensile capacity of 6,675 lb. The bending and torsion capacity is out of the scope of what we can provide. Thank you!

Q:I'm planning to use your 1" all-thread (ATR1X36ZP) to anchor a 50' X 60' steel building. I'll be drilling into the concrete piers and using your adhesive (probably the epoxy type) to secure the 1" anchors. Is there a general or specific rule for how deep into the concrete the anchors should be set?

              Answer This Question

A:  There is not a general rule...the anchor embedment must be specified by the Engineer of Record and there are many factors that come into play (type of adhesive used, concrete strength, how close to the edge/end, spacing, etc.). Thank you!

A:  Torque values for ATSM 1554 are generally not given. The book says that whatever tightening that can be accomplished by an ironworker with a spud wrench is sufficient. If you don’t know what a spud wrench is, think of a crescent wrench with a spike for a handle.
