Q:Can I use for treated wood picket fence
by|Dec 22, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hi Macman, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. These nails have a hot dip galvanized finish which provides a medium level of corrosion resistance. We suggest that all users obtain recommendations on corrosion from the suppliers of the material that will be used, in particular treated wood. Treated wood can have various chemical makeups and concentrations. The treated wood supplier can provide you with their evaluation report which should provide some guidance to you regarding corrosion. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. Thank you.

Q:Can I use these on roofing shingles if I run out of regular roofing nails?

    Answer This Question

A:  Depends on type of shingle...for regular shingles no. For wood or tile maybe.

A:  Hello, this is Stacy with Simpson Strong-Tie. The SCN smooth-shank connector nail is not designed to be used for roofing applications. Typically roofing nails are made of stainless steel where as these SCN nails are hot-dipped galvanized. We cannot say these would be okay to be used as an alternative. If you wish to discuss this further please call us at (800) 999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

Q:Are the SD Connector Screws (SD9112R100) a suitable substitute for the nails?

          Answer This Question

A:  Hello CCGA, this is Ricardo with Simpson. In regards to substituting the nails for our connectors with the SD Connector Screws, we do offer substitutions for certain hangers, post caps and bases, and straps. In order to see if the specific connector you are installing is approved for a screw substitution, please contact our Technical Support Team at 800.999.5099.

A:  Yes they are. We use screws in place of nails when possible. Depending on the application of course.

A:  They are for use with a hammer or palm nailer.

              by|May 17, 2022

A:  No you can’t use in a nail gun. Only hammer.

A:  Hello Jimbo, this is Stacy with Simpson Strong-Tie. We do have a collated version of these nails that can be used as a power-driven alternative. For this size in particular you could take a look at models N10HDGPT500 or N10HDGPT3000. The difference between the two is the box quantity. If you have any other questions feel free to call us at (800) 999-5099. We look forward to speaking with you.

A:  There is a nailgun with a feature that locates the nailgun properly so the nail strikes the hole location. If this is a one time use or you will use infrequently and don’t want to buy one more tool, use a standard hammer. I don’t advise using a standard nailgun

A:  Of course, this will vary depending on the nail manufacturer, but the following website will give you a pretty good estimate: https://www.treeisland.com/sites/default/files/documents/brochures-spec-sheets/Average%20nails%20per%20pound.pdf

A:  It is not clear what "this" palm nailer is that you're referring to as the question is posed on the Simpson Strong-Tie SCN Smooth-Shank Connector Nail page. Thank you!

A:  This will be a slow way to install roofing nails, but it will work and gives you very good control of the nail depth.

A:  I'm a homeowner and used a DeWalt and a Metabo palm nailer. Works great. Could have used a hammer -- but why? Would have likely bent a few with the hammer in the tight quarters. The nails do bite into the wood. Try pulling and moving a hanger after install. You see they bite quite well.

A:  There are approximate 120 ND10D5HDG nails per pound, so approximately 600 in the 5 lb. container. Thank you!
