Q:Are the bases of these planters hollow? I am trying to cover a 4" piece of lamp pole that is sticking out of a stone pillar that was originally the pole for an outdoor lamp. The pole is about 3" around. Curious to know if the bottom of these urns are hollow and would sit over the post.

A: Yes the base is hollow... it should do the trick for you...

A: The bases of these are hollow.

A: The base resembles a turned over pot which has no opening on top. There’s a container that sits ontop of the base that you turn to fasten and it has a spot that is pencil thickness wide that with the use of a screw driver can be opened by poking through the area for drainage.

A: I believe you would have to drill a hole. They are 2 pieces and screw together. The bottom is not open. Hope this helps!

A: No, the base is molded. You can easily drill the base with a hole saw the size of the lamp pole.

Q:The description says for small to medium plants. Would a hydrangea or large peace lily work in this? Are they dark as the picture shows (black)?

A: I think a hydrangea might eventually get too big for this, but a peace lily would probably work. There is no drainage hole, so it would be best to drill a few or at least put rock in the base before planting anything. They are dark, but more of a weathered look. I love them, they are easy to care for and have held up very well.

A: The opening is wide and the planter is deep. I think a peace lily may do well. If the hydrangea is small, it may be fine, otherwise it may not have enough space.

A: Yes. The dirt capacity is large on top and is quite deep.

A: Yes, these urns are a pretty good size and quite deep. Should have no trouble planting those.
They are a bit lighter in color. Though black, there is a lighter gray or white weathered effect that is added.

A: Yes these are large enough. They are black.

A: Yes, they are large enough for either of those. They are black and look quite nice I’ve used mine for large Boston Ferns the last two years.
I would purchase these again

A: I have plants in 7x7 inch pots down inside of these pots. There is plenty of vertical room to spare, but I'm not certain whether a larger diameter pot would fit down inside. You could definitely plant hydrangea or a large peace lily in these, but if those plants are already in pots that you are putting inside of these, I would make sure the diameter of the interior pot is not much more than 7 inches. They are not stark black. Very weathered looking black. More of a charcoal.

A: Yes, but I would prime them first and use a good outdoor paint, possible even seal them if they will have exposure to the weather. I left mine gray and they have held up extremely well.. Also make sure if you will be planting in them or even placing potted plants in them, drill a couple of holes before starting for drainage, as there are none.

A: I think they can be. The material seems like it could be spray painted. I have other planters that were similar in material. I spray painted them and they came out fine.

A: roughly .5cu ft

A: We used 2 bags of Miracle Grow potting soil. (1 per urn) I believe they were 8 quarts bags.
by|May 5, 2023
A: I am not sure how much it will take; however, I will add some light-weight filler to the bottom on mine--i.e., packing peanuts, styrofoam, etc., to cut down the weight and amount of soil it will take. Hope this helps. (I have done this before with planters and have had success.)
