Q:What is the diameter of the warm wire? I am hoping to retrofit underfloor heating in an existing floor in specific areas, by removing those areas of flooring. My thought is that I could cut a groove into the cement board already in place, so I could sink the wire in. That way I would maintain floor height with the flooring that is not being removed. Can this be done?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi John, The cable is a 1/8” thick but must be embedded in a ¼” to a ½” of mortar thin-set or self-leveler. Cutting groves into backer board would not be an approved method for installation. Best, Watts team

Q:Remodeling a master bath with 3/4-in. tongue-and-groove plywood floor. Planned to use 1/4 in. Cement Board for the underlayment. Would this cause any problems? Should I thinset directly to the plywood? Or use a different underlayment?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi Daniel. Thank you for your question. Although the SunTouch Floor Warming WarmWire can bd installed on top of your concrete floor, it must be installed with the “Membrane Mat”. https://www.homedepot.com/p/SunTouch-Floor-Warming-HeatMatrix-161-sq-ft-Uncoupling-Membrane-Mat-8006GRY161-ST/300723831 For additional information on tile installation, please contact TCNA at 864-646-8453 or visit their web site at www.tileusa.com, or contact NTCA at 601-939-2071 or see their web site at www.tile-assn.com. When installing floor coverings other than tile or stone, follow industry and/or manufacturer’s recommendations. Ensure the wire is first covered with a layer of self-leveling cement based mortar, letting it cure fully before applying any surface underlayment, floating wood or laminate flooring, carpet, etc. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Answer This Question

A:  Hello, We would need further information on what you mean by a sud floor; if you are referring to placing it in between the floor joists, then no; they will need underfloor mats in that case. Best, Watts team

                Answer This Question

A:  Hi NC, There aren't really pros vs. cons; the only difference is the coverage area of the control. 120 V is up to 150 square feet, and 240V is up to 300 square feet before you add the relay. The system can be used under laminated wood floors, but will still need to be embedded in a 1/4 to 1/2 inch thin-set or self-leveler. Lastly, the items you listed is all you need; you can add a loud mouth OR use a digital multi meter to check resistance. Thank you, Watts team
