Q:Can you explain what a solenoid valve does? I was searching a filter to put on a garden hose I'm drilling small holes in like a drip system. It says to put the filter in after the solenoid. I'm curious what a solenoid does on a real drip system.

A:  Hi, there! Thanks for your question. This encapsulated solenoid #53708, provides flow control to reduce water waste from misting and fogging. These valves are typically installed below ground and are housed in a valve box keeping them securely out of sight. For any additional questions, please feel free to contact Toro Customer Support at 1-888-384-9939. Hours are Monday – Friday 8:00am-4:30pm CST. Thanks!

Q:Are the parts of this valve compatible with an Irritrol 2400T?

      Answer This Question

A:  Not sure but these Toros have been good for us. First set of 9 lasted 20+ yrs. This current set has better designed rubber valves & trouble free for 5 yrs now. Not sure if Irritrol is compatible. Toros are jar tops & easy to open if ever needed. The old Irritrol I had was a pain because it had 4-5 little screws to get it open & hard to put back together.

A:  If the 2400T valve 10 years or less, it is compatible. Thank you.

Q:Two part question: if i unscrew the top part, can I replace with a new "top part" from another, new valve? (solenoid, diaphragm, spring, etc) And: does not having screws holding the top part on mean it will leak easier?

A:  By rotating the Retention Ring CCW, you can gain access to the diaphragm and the stainless steel spring. The diaphragm can be changed out with a new one – being careful to align the raised circular sealing bead, around the diaphragm’s perimeter, within the groove in the body. Note: There is a circular ring known as a Diaphragm Support installed inside the valve body that does not need to be removed and should be left in place to maintain its tight fit. The Diaphragm spring should not need replacement. Once the Diaphragm is installed and the Diaphragm sealing bead is in the groove, carefully align the Top Cover and then bring the Retention Ring down and tighten the assembly by rotating the Ring CW. Tighten the Ring hand tight. It should be very tight by hand but there is really no need to tighten it down with a tool. If needed, the solenoid can be replaced with the Top Cover installed, by turning it CCW while holding the manual on-off lever stationary. To install a new solenoid, simply align the solenoid threads with the threads in the white plastic adapter, known as a Bleed Plug, and rotate the solenoid until it is hand tight. There is no need to use any tools to tighten the solenoid into the Bleed Plug and no need to even use a lot of force by hand. If trouble shooting a valve performance issue, I recommend replacing the Solenoid or the Diaphragm independently so that the failure can be identified – especially since replacing one or the other is easy. The “Jar Top” valves are easier to service since there is no need to align and install multiple screws.

A:  Thank you for your question. A jar top valve allows the homeowner or contractor to access the internal parts of the valve by screwing off the top of valve as opposed to having to remove screws that attach the top (bonnet) of the valve.

              Answer This Question

A:  I would have to see the valve in question to see if the jar top would interchange.. if they are doing a total replacement I don't see why it would work.

              by|Oct 24, 2018

A:  Thank you for your question. Yes, although the 53708 parts are not interchangeable with the older 290-05-14 valve, the overall functionality of the 53708 is the same.

A:  53708 Diaphragm would be a good start, could be debris or worn solenoid plunger.

A:  that is why I had to replace mine which was another brand. when I took it out, there was a whole bunch of debris and junk in there. I am going to try and put a suction strainer or filter in the line. I replaced mine with the Toro and it is working for now. I plan to put a strainer in the line as soon as I can.

A:  as long as 24volts ac is applied to the two wires it is ok. not sure how your timer works after plugging into the 110vac. Mine has a transformer which converts the 110vac to 24vac and then outputs 24volt ac to each station. Just don't let anything but 24volts ac touch the two wires on the valve.

A:  No, because the solenoid is design to work with 24VAC output. Most all irrigation controller output is 24VAC. However, there is a company that sells a retrofit solenoid to use with this valve and a 120V output controller. Here is the link: Industrial Plastic Valves Company http://www.ipvalves.com/

A:  These lawn valves work off a lower AC voltage. They sell units that run them and most can handle at least 4 zones, can be programed to run on specific days of the week and have battery backup.
