Q:This is for “barn quilts” mounted on exterior walls of buildings. These decorative paintings are multicolor and latex exterior painted that will be exposed to the weather, i.e., sun, rain, snow. I want a product that will protect and preserve the vibrant colors from peeling and bleeding onto the art as long as possible.

A:  Great question! Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Spar Urethane can be applied to exterior painted wood surfaces will help protect again the elements and UV exposure. Please keep in mind, since this is an oil-based wood finish, it will have a warm, golden tone to it. For a crystal clear finish, we recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane instead. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Gloss-Water-Based-Exterior-Spar-Urethane-2-Pack-250041H/202057143 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

        Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Bobby! Rust-Oleum Varathane Spar Urethane Oil Based is recommended for use on stained, painted, or unfinished wood. If applying over an epoxy, a test application is suggested to confirm the desired results are achieved. Light sanding is also suggested to create a surface profile for adhesion. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 4

A:  Yes, it definitely gives protection. Note it is very glossy look. If there is big gap on surface, need filler first

A:  I used this to seal a 20+ year old particle board workbench 3' x 6'. The top had been abused, weathered and was quite porous. After disc sanding it with coarse grit, it took about 4 coats (drying in between) to bring it to a nice smooth glass like surface. It has been holding up pretty well. However, it is no longer exposed to sun and rain. I do not have any experience with particle board coated with this that is thereafter subject to the elements. I've used it on 4x4 redwood posts fully exposed to elements. I used two thin coats to start (Don't over-apply it s it will crack or peel), and every few years lightlly sand and put another thin coat on any sides that are showing deterioration. They are doing well now for past 10 years in Arizona sun.

              by|Nov 6, 2022

A:  Yes- only if both sides and edges are coated.

A:  Glad to help out, Robert. Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-based Spar Urethane can be applied to seal particle board. We would still recommend lightly sanding and cleaning the surface first for the best adhesion. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Q:I've used 4 coats of this on the edges of 3/4" marine grade plywood that I am using for the floor of a small utility trailer. Can I also use this on the front and backsides of the plywood to seal that as well?

A:  I used 2 coats of this product on a wooden patio door threshold 3 years ago. Still looks great. Used the rest of the can on pressure treated utility trailer floor. It did not work in that case. Within one year, the sealer had peeled off. But, to be honest, I did not use the product as directed.

A:  Happy to help! While Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Spar Urethane is great for exterior surfaces, we do not recommend it for use on surfaces that will be walked on or that will receive any sort of vehicle traffic. This type of exposure will cause the coating to crack and peel. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  I applied this to an outdoor bench and it has kept the surface protected for the past 2 years. If you apply this to both the inside and outside surface, you may need to reapply it every 2 or 3 years, due to weathering.

A:  It shouldn't be a problem as long as the chalk paint is cured (not just dry to the touch) I would recommend testing it on a spot unlikely to show; that way if it does 'orange peel' or crack the chalk paint you will only have to repair a small spot.

A:  You wont be able to use the chalkboard once you use this over it. This will seal it.

A:  I am unsure this would work as you intend it too. Part of the process is to ensure there is no dust or anything on the surface before you put it on. Chalk paint I believe is inherently dusty isn't it? Putting Kilz paint on under the chalk paint might be a better approach though the chalk is somewhat porous anyway so it might retain water. Sorry for somewhat of an ambiguous answer but I hope it helps a little.

A:  I would hesitate to use this over chalk paint, especially light colors. It is likely to yellow over time. I think multiple coats of the Varathane clear waterbased poly would be a better choice. I have used that on multiple projects. Do a few extra coats on the top where it is likely to get wet (maybe a total of 6-7) and sand in between uses for a nice smooth finish. I used this outdoors over bare pine and it is lovely.

A:  This is a very good choice for your project. It takes a while to dry, but it's worth it. I would suggest lightly sanding after each coat has dried before applying another coat. The more coats you apply, the glassier the surface appears if you use gloss, but that is up to you.
