Wasted Money
On can it states, that it can be used for residential hardwood floors, so it must be pretty durable. However it never cured completely on My Grate Project, even after two weeks of waiting. Now I have to spend tons of time to peel it off and redo the finish on my project. What a waste of time and money. Very disappointed. Would not recommend it at all.

    Nasty yellow.
Used a pint of oil base Satin on interior wood doors that I white washed. Product is not clear. Yellowed very badly. Dripped and pooled in the corners of window panes in big goopy yellow glops. After 1 week still like goo and not dry. Used my utility knife to scrape it all out and sand it all off. No good!

      CONTRACTOR'S REVIEW
the product was good, BUT at multiple stores I found that the same product was a purple substance [NOT CLEAR WITH AN AMBER TINT) that BEHR could/would not identify? I was reimbursed for the material that I purchased, BUT not compensated for the time to correct the mistake, nor was I compensated for the finished lumber it ruined? The price is the same as MINWAX, BUT the quality is NOT, so as a contractor you would expect a lower price to match the lower quality?

Drys to look like wiped with dirty dishrag!
I make furniture pieces like stepstools and dog feeding stations. I have made at least 100. I have found most polys to be pretty similar. I noticed this product to be a lighter color and more milky than other brands as I stirred it. Because the products I make either get stepped on a lot or stay wet a lot, I use several coats of poly. This poly made furniture tops appear as if they had recently been wiped with a dirty dishrag. I had to sand this poly off and repoly with Old Masters brand.

Hi Jackson, thanks for your review. I'm sorry to hear our Oil-Based Polyurethane dried with a dark/dirty finish; this isn't the experience we want our customers to have. Oil-based products can have a dark or amber finish to them, so I'd recommend using a water-based polyurethane instead for a truly clear finish. Customer Satisfaction is very important to us, so feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team directly for further assistance. They are always happy to help. Enjoy the rest of your day. -Christina Behr

        Beautiful but very slow drying
The finished product was beautiful... the poly came together smoothly and without blemish. I gave it 2 stars because the first coat took 24 hours to dry...at 65 degrees and 50 percent humidity. Thought it would dry just like the label said, in couple hours.

Hi John, thanks for the review. Sorry to heat that it took 24 hours for the first coat to day. This isn't typical. The polyurethane should be dry and ready to recoat in 2-4 hours. Glad to hear that the finished product was beautiful. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Not what I was expecting
Let me preface this review that I am used to the Minwax fast dry oil based poly. I have used that many times as a quick clear protective finish. Since it's not available at HD, I figured I would give Behr a try. Overall, it worked okay for my current project but I don't think I will buy any more once the can is gone. First off, it's not actually clear. It has a grey/purple tint in the can while your typical poly has a light amber tone. The tint wasn't noticable in the finish unless I went too thick or had a run. I would be hesitant to use this as a top coat for white paint though. The smell is also very different from other polyurethanes. Not over-strong, just different. Reminds me of Testors enamel model paint I used as a kid.

            My experience was horrible
In a field we found a weathered, solid oak, dowelled CD rack straight from the 80's. This would match our oak furniture from the 80's we are saving for a cabin so I decided to restore it. It was disassembled, sanded and filled, I replaced the rotting twisted base . A red-oak oil stain was purchased and applied then it was glued back together. I chose Behr satin polyurethane, this is where all went horribly wrong. The 1st sign of an issue was the purple color to the poly. All other clear poly products I have used, you can see the bottom of can when full. I applied the product and 1 day later it was still glossy, it was also not dry! I should have stopped when I noticed how 'gloppy' the product was. I had to re-sand the entire piece after I had glued it back together! Thankfully most of the mess came off with mineral spirits. I bought a competitors satin and completed the job. It turned out pretty good if not great. Perhaps the Behr poly was from a bad batch, but I wont buy anymore of it.

Hi gandude - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that this product had a purple tint to it in the can, the sheen looked very glossy, and the finish felt wet after a day of dry time! This product should feel dry to the touch after 2 hours and dry enough to sand and recoat after 2-4 hours. If stirring the polyurethane for a few minutes before use and reapplying it in a small test area doesn't correct the sheen and allow the finish to dry, it's best to continue your project with a new can. It sounds like you've already finished your project, but if you need any more assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We'd be happy to help. - Sara Behr

We updated our kitchen cabinets ourselves, first striping, then sanding, priming, painting and finally used this polyurethane finish. Sanding in between coats, using 320 Grit to achieve a nice finish. We did 6 coats, waited 24 hours with the first coat and then less time with the following coats. Looks amazing and dries faster than you would expect for an oil based product. Nice thick and shiny finsh!

BEHR Semi-Gloss Clear Oil-Based Interior Fast Drying Polyurethane is a ihgh quality product that meets or exceeds all of the advertised aspects. I wanted to enhance and protect a small table that my wife purchased at an estate sale. The table is very unique hand made item that works well her in the mountains, but it had obviously not been cared for. The Behr Urethane created a smooth, that allowed its true beauty to shine through. In spite of the fact that it is a cool rainy day today, the finish dried quickly in the open garage which made it possible for me to apply a second coat as necessary. I highly recommend this product for even the most challending project.

Behr oil-based polyurethane is a nice thick product. This version does have a nice matte finish. While it is a nice matte finish it still has a reasonable amount is shine. I was very pleased with the ease of use and normal oil-based product clean up. I also found that it took slightly longer than 2 hours to dry but I am assuming this is because I use a really thick 1st coat.

BEHR 1 QT. MATTE CLEAR OIL-BASED INTERIOR FAST DRYING POLYURETHANE is a quality oil based stain from Behr. Always making a quality product, Behr has created an oil based polyurethane that dries quickly and looks stunning when dry. The one quart size container is easy to open and handle and the polyurethane is easy to apply. It also goes on pretty evenly. Great product.

BEHR 1 QT. SEMI-GLOSS CLEAR OIL-BASED INTERIOR FAST DRYING POLYURETHANE Is a polyurethane meant for interior wood. This is an oil based stain that comes in an easy to use quart size container. It’s easy to apply and dries really quickly. BEHR 1 QT. SATIN CLEAR OIL-BASED INTERIOR FAST DRYING POLYURETHANE Is a quality product from Behr that is an oil based polyurethane. This polyurethane goes on smoothly and dries quickly and has a satin finish. It looks especially good on natural wood but would also look good on other colors as well. The one quart size container is easy to open and the polyurethane is transparent despite dark color in the container.

My old rake had seen its better days and the finish was almost completely gone so I decided to re-finish it to make it nice for a second life. I spent 15 minutes sanding with 60 grit paper followed by 120 grit and then 300 grit. I used and air gun to remove the dust followed by a wipe down with damp rag. After letting it dry I applied the clear oil based polyurethane. It was 60 degrees so it took almost 3 hours for it to dry enough to apply a second coat. It went on easily and does not have much of an odor. The finish is smooth and nice to handle.

I have always used oil-based polyurethane because I had concern about raised grain and also long-term performance. Recently I decided to try refinishing with Behr Satin Clear Water-Based Interior/Exterior Spar Urethane Wood Sealer with excellent results. Both first and second coats went on smooth and easy and quickly dried to a nice uniform smooth coating with no raised grain. It also had low odor and easy cleanup. So, for one of my current projects, using walnut, I decided to compare BEHR Satin Clear Water-Based Interior Fast Drying Polyurethane and Behr Oil Based Polyurethane. Both went on easily with the oil-based taking longer to dry, recoat and cleanup. The principal difference in the end is the color change with the water-based closely maintaining the original wood color and the oil-based darkening the appearance. My wife and I chose different products for this project so now I don’t get to select. I have become very ready to use water-based poly and will select which to use based on my observations in these experiences. `

I don't use Polyurethane often because I'm afraid to have runs and not have good coverage. Behr has created a great product that makes it easy to apply and covers on the first coat without running. I used the polyurethane on a coat rack project and it definitely improved the look. I first stained the rack and then made sure to remove any lint or material with a non linting cloth. I gave it a coat of the polyurethane and let it dry for about 4 hours and then brought it inside. Easy to apply and I had no runs. Go slow so you don't have bubbles. Make sure you pick up some mineral cleaner so you can clean your brush. I would recommend this product to enhance your projects. Loved it so much that I'm considering it for my next project.

This BEHR 1 qt. Satin Clear Oil-Based Interior Fast Drying Polyurethane is a very cool looking stain on the finished product. It looks darker in the can but it comes out semi-transparent which I like because you can put a light coat on or add a bit darker on certain areas to give different patterns. This one was a satin finish that I used starting with a brush and then for the second coat I put the stain on using a rag. Can label says rich color in one step but it states in back label directions that two or more coats should be added. Of course as with all stains whether over bare wood or wood that has a previous poly coat on it - instructions say to sand with various grits & clean first. Definitely a good polyurethane to use!

My husband and I have used Behr products for a very long time. When we saw these come available we definitely wanted to give it a go. We have a new home and we have all the baseboard trim and window and door trim in wood. Naturally we need to finish it off with a nice protection coat of satin poly right? We it turned out GORGEOUS! The door in the photo is finished and next will be the trim. Great product!

What I like most about this Behr matte clear oil-based interior polyurethane is how fast it dries. I needed a new top coat on my antique kitchen pub table. It went on quite easily without having to worry about brush marks showing. I usually use water base paints, etc but decided this oil based polyurethane would hold up better on the table. Once finished and dried, it has a nice smooth finish.

BEHR offers a full range of both waterborn and oil-based polyurethane finishes in sheen levels from satin, semi-gloss, and gloss. The choice of waterborne vs oil-based polyurethane is based on several factors including the use of the item being finished, the durability of needed, clarity of the finish and finally, the ease of cleanup. For years, varnish which is a natural product made with a combination of resin, oil, and solvent was the heavy duty clear coat finish of choice. Polyurethane is a newer 100% synthetic “varnish” made with a combination of plastic resin and solvents - essentially a liquid plastic finish. This BEHR oil-based polyurethane is different than many of the other manufacturers’ polyurethane. Most other brands are a medium to dark amber tone in the can whereas this BEHR poly appears quite gray/green. The amber-toned polys impart a very notable amber color to the wood to which they are applied and will immediately and noticeably darken the the wood to an amber tone. This BEHR polyurethane, however, imparts far less ambering effect than other polyurethanes which is an important consideration should you not wish to change the stained color of your project. For example, a piece of pine furniture stained with Miniwax Early American oil stain will look completely different when top coated with Minwax polyurethane vs BEHR polyurethane. The Minwax polyurethane has a much greater ambering effect while the BEHR will only minimally darken the piece. It’s something to consider. In use I found this BEHR polyurethane very easy to apply. As alway, carefully follow the label instructions to prep the surface and to apply the product. It’s quick dry time will allow re-coat in 2-4 hours but I strongly recommend waiting a minimum of 4 hours. Sand the surface, remove the dust with a tack cloth, and apply additional coats. I find that 3 coats will yield the the optimum final result. This polyurethane will produce a durable, flawless finish when applied correctly. For a truly glass-like finish you may want to rub down the final fully cured coat with 3000-4000 grit wet/dry sandpaper and water or a paste of pumice or rotten-stone. It is worth noting that this polyurethane, like all others, will gradually darken and yellow with age. If this is undesirable then use BEHR water-borne polyurethane instead.

Oil-based polyurethane that is relatively "fast" drying. This poly is easy to use. I used a rag to apply it onto one of my wood projects that already had a "tung oil finish" applied to it. I sanded it down a bit before applying the poly. This oil-based poly appears to be "self-leveling" so that when it dried, it looked very smooth and glossy, which I really like. The manufacturer states that it is fast drying. It took around 2+ hours for it to be dry to the touch. It is not as fast as the water-based poly (around 1 hour drying time). Because it is oil-based, you would need some kind of thinner for clean up. Please note that there was a bit of an odor from the poly so make sure your work area is well ventilated. The finish looks great.

I like working on different projects and since I like some things to be shinny and have protection while others I like them to have a nice original look but with protection so it is when this matte finish polyurethane comes in handy. I have a desk in my office and since I did not want to buy a new one because of the cost I just wanted to put a coat of polyurethane so it can resist scratches. I did put the coat on and left for a few hours and when I came back it was dry to the touch and since the instructions said to do 2 to 3 coats I did two. And as for light use you have to wait for up to 24 hours and for full use up to 4 days. So it has been a couple of days and it looks nice, not shinny as it would with the gloss finish, the matte finish looks elegant on the desk. Polyurethane usually dries slowly but it sets nice so I am happy with the finish project with Behr.
