This model jams
I thought this heavy commercial unit would cut like a dream, and it does for about 15 minutes, then you have to spend 15 minutes talking the cutting head apart cleaning out the fibers. I regret this purchase.

10 min trimming, 20 minutes unclogging the line
Absolute garbage. The tool itself works as well as any other but the trimming head that comes with and the bump head that I bought separately for $35 are completely useless. The line tangles about every 5 to 10 minutes and then i takes a good 10 minutes to disassemble and unclog the line. I have 4.5 acres of residential area on my ranch and I could trim the weeds faster and with far less frustration on my hands and knees with clippers. I would return it if I could.

      Perfect for our .60 acre
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've had only good experiences with dewalt, so I figured I'd give this a try. I wasn't sure if a cordless weed eater was a good idea, but I hate mixing gas so I went for it anyway. This thing blows my gas trimmer out of the water. It cuts clean, and has more power then our gas troybilt trimmer. I use it on low speed, and it's still insanely powerful. I did our .60 acre lot on a single battery, and that's doing a fence line, playground, around fire pits and trees, plus edging flower beds and all around the driveways and road. It takes me 2 tanks of gas on my gas trimmer, so needless to say, I'm impressed. My only regret is not getting the leaf blower package deal.

        Constant malfunctions
This is unusable. It constantly overfeed and wraps strung around the head. Takes maybe minutes to fix and then immediately does it again Seems like the bump head is not working and let's too much string out. Total waste of money. Used to be a DeWalt guy. Dcst972 with 9ah battery. Won't let me add pictures.

          Up in SMOKE!
Timmer is great! I purchased one in May this year and worked perfect until last week. Then trimmer head smoked and stopped working. I let it cool off overnight and tried it again with a full battery. That did not work. I hope Dewalt will stand by their tools. This trimmer should last longer than 5 months!

            Dewalt Warranty is a joke
I have had this less than a year and After 3 hours of emails back and forth ( they can't ask for all Infromation at once when bought etc.) they sent a link to Service center locator. When I put in my zip code I get No Results Found. I did find an authorized repair shop on my own but have to drive 90 miles to have them look at it. I have also found that you have to keep cleaning the head off so that the clippings don't plug the air vents off on the head.

Great trimmer, trimmer head wear frustrating
Great trimmer but the trimmer spool head has worn out in less than two years. The photo shows the holes in plastic trimmer spool head cover.

Nice trimmer but needs a better guard
I used the trimmer to trim and edge around my entire yard and still had half the battery left. It had plenty of power and did a great job except for one thing. I was pelted with mulch and gravel since the anemic guard provided with the trimmer is wholly inadequate. In the manual it states, "An extended coverage guard is available (sold separately) for extra coverage if desired. Use DEWALT replacement guard Part Number 90624357." Unfortunately, that is a non-existent part number. After quite a bit of searching, I determined the actual part you need is N512929. It installed fine and provides much better protection (see picture). Dewalt, please update your manual, so customers know what part to order. Even better, please include a real guard to save us all the hassle in the first place!

                  almost perfect!
as a person over 6', this trimmer is really comfortable to use though the user height doesn't seem to be adjustable. it has about as much power as a gas trimmer without the hassle of mixing fuel and with even a 6ah flex volt battery let alone the 9ah it comes with you're not likely to kill a battery unless you have ALOT of trimming to do but even then the charger it comes with is a fast charger. the only 2 drawbacks for me personally are price (which you get what you pay for) and the exhaust vent being at the trimmer head instead of at the handle which means you have to clean it frequently or else risk smoking the motor (takes about 5 minutes and is 4 flathead screws). without those drawbacks, this thing would be perfection but is still a product worth buying! great tool from a good manufacturer

                    9AH battery version
Bought this because I hate dealing gas weed eaters. Draining gas during off season. Just wanted to be able to slap on the battery and go. This does the trick! First time I used it for about 45 min and the battery still shows full. Has plenty of power to chop up thick grass. I actually use it to chop up a bunch of wild bushes that were coming up next to my house. As in the amount of time it will truly run on a single charge I'm not sure but it will do all I need for sure! Once again I bought the one with the 9ah battery DCST970X1S. The string that came with it did hang a few times and I had to take it apart to fix it. I'm assuming it's because the string has been in it since they built it. Mine has the easy wind up string that you just feed in one side and out the other and twist. I like that feature. It does have a little weight to it with the monster battery on it but it's no heavier than the gas inches I've owned. I just need to find me a Dewalt strap for it and I'll be good for much longer.

                      Buy it
I was skeptical to buy based on the bad reviews. This is a quality piece of equipment. It’s about the same weight as a gas trimmer but is very well balanced and has just as much probably more power. Old 20v trimmer went through 3 batteries to do our estate size yard and this one finishes with 1 charge and power to spare. A solid 50 minute task. I would recommend buying the larger guard part number N512929 makes a big difference in discharge amount and user cleanliness. My only complaint is there isn’t an edger attachment.

                        Disappointed
The trimmer has plenty of power but even on low I can't finish my 1 acre lot with the 9ah battery. The guard does almost nothing to stop debris and the motor is always covered in grass trimmings. I vacuumed mine out. I've used it under 10 times and today 2 minutes into trimming I had to keep bumping it because string wouldn't feed out. Only slightly harder than usual and the shaft bent. Still works but I'm returning immediately. I was very hopeful switching from a gas weed trimmer. Now I have to figure out something else.

                          Poor QA for dewalt
Im a big fan of dewalt tools, so when i saw an electric weedeater whose battery is swappable with my other tools i was excited. Well i should have just bought a regular 4-cycle weedeater. About a year after buying and only using 1-2 times a month during 1 and 1/3 mowing seasons it stopped working. Checked the battery it was fine. Opened the sucker up and a wire was melted and apparently exploded because there was black soot everywhere. I will not be buying another electric weedeater anytime soon and i guess i wont be buying anymore new dewalt tools for a while either.

Broke after 1 year of use
This trimmer was great while it was working and not so much once it quite working. Ive owned the trimmer about a year before it stopped working. Used only about 1-2 times a month during the mowi g season. I was weedeating when it just quite. Thought it was battery, but it still showed a charge. Swapped batteries and still nothing. Opened the weedeater up and the inside is completely black from where the wires melted and apparently exploded. I will not be buying another electric weedeater for a while and i was excited about it cause im all for stop using 4-cycle mixtures.

Title above says 3 Ah but it actually came with a 9 Ah battery. This trimmer is a BEAST. I got for Christmas a two pack of 6 Ah batteries that also work with this. My first job was a 4 foot by 80 foot clearing beneath a retaining wall. Some grass, mostly thick trunked weeds including some thistle and milk weed. It literally devoured it all. All done using the thinner .85 line. Battery only went down one light. I also own an Echo gas trimmer. I much prefer this Dewalt. Two observations: be prepared to shower after. It spews wet bits everywhere and you will be covered. Another thing is the motor vents get covered near instantly. Seems no good way to clean out. Lastly, I got to a patch of tall thin grass. Some so long it caused to wrap around the shaft. Not too hard to remove, yet not easy either.

                              Quality buy!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I needed a trimmer for some time, but I’ve always used fuel powered trimmers and was hesitant to buy this one. After extensive research I decided to make the purchase and this trimmer exceeded my expectations. It has the power of a commercial trimmer. It’s lightweight, balanced, has a low/high setting for regulating the power output and conserving battery life and paired with a .095 line can cut through anything in its path. Battery operated tools are always a hassle when the battery dies mid project, but it had two bars of battery life even after I was finished. The one downside to this product is the small guard, as it does not provide enough protection. But after all it offers, the good outweighs that minor detail.

Love the concept. Still needs work.
Purchased this 3 days ago. I'm not able to pull the string of a gas trimmer hard enough to start it, so we thought this would be perfect for me. After 4 battery cycles over 2 days, we're going to return it. First the good: -- I love the concept. It was so easy to use. Click the battery in and squeeze the trigger. -- Cuts great. -- Good power that stays strong right up until the battery dies. -- The battery took about 2 1/2 hours to charge from completely drained to fully-charged. -- It took about 20-25 minutes to drain cutting weeds on high power. -- Nicely weight-balanced so I'm not leaning to compensate to hold it up. Then the bad: I used it a total of 90 minutes over 2 days, which equaled 4 cycles of the battery being fully-charged. I'm including several photos. -- The battery is hard to get out of the charger and off of the trimmer. This was made for somebody with very strong hands. -- The manual says to make sure the air vents are kept clear. This is IMPOSSIBLE in this design. They were covered with bits of grass within 5 minutes. Had to stop trimming and brush it out repeatedly. -- Even after brushing out the grass bits from the air vents, there is still smaller grass bits stuck inside that can't be reached to be removed. See photos. -- I had to add string twice in the 90 minutes total trim time I used this. Both times it was nearly impossible for me to turn the ring while holding the head. I had to have my husband do it, and he had difficulty the second time. -- I figured out the reason for the difficulty when I couldn't get the string to advance either. Tiny bits of grass had caked up in the space between the ring and the trimmer head. I scraped out about 1/4" thick ring of caked grass before my last time using the trimmer. -- As the trimmer head is spinning, grass gets twisted around it. A lot of grass gets stuck up under the trimmer head so that you can't get it out. There is no way to take the trimmer head off, that I can see, so it isn't going anywhere. It interferes with the spinning of the trimmer head while it's running and it interferes with the release of the string when you bump it. The last cycle I used the trimmer, I stopped at least 5 times to pull out the grass I could reach from around the trimmer head. I loved the ease of starting and handling this trimmer. For the price of the trimmer and the extra battery you need if you want to trim for more than 25 minutes at a time, I'd have expected a better design of the vents, the way to load the string, and the trimmer head itself. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody who has anything more than 5" high grass around a small yard to trim. Higher or thicker than that or a larger yard, you're going to need 2 batteries and you might be stopping a lot to clean out the vents and remove the grass from under the head.

                                    Horrible Head-Design; Otherwise Outstanding Tool!
I make sure that I do not write reviews until I have used a product for a good while. I bought this 10 months ago, used it several times a week for an average of a couple hours at a time, for several weeks (until county weed abatement requirements were met). I am a pretty loyal DeWalt tool owner for about 20 years. They are my preference. I have about a dozen tools using the 20V/60 system. The GOOD... This trimmer definitely has power that rivals gas trimmers. The battery life is not amazing, but what one would expect for the work that it has been doing. Having to swap batteries forces me to take a break. It is well balanced, well-designed, comfortable, and rugged. I like that housing on the battery-end has what is essential a built-in hook to hang it vertically. As far as quality, overall design, feel, cost and power, the tool is fantastic! The BAD... I'm pretty smart, but simple arrows molded onto the head would be nice to remind me of which way to wind it. (Because, this head can spin both ways). I agree with another reviewer that removing the battery takes some brute force at times. Sometimes I have to smack it quite firmly with the heel of my hand, and even that doesn't work sometimes. Sometimes I have to knock it against a stump, tree branch/trunk, 2x4, etc. The well-intentioned (and otherwise well-designed) guard around the battery hinders this process. I can overlook this, but can understand why this would be unacceptable to others, though. The UGLY... Where the product was demoted from 5 stars is that the head pretty much seized-up at the end of last season. I figured I would get to it later, now it's spring and it's that time. I am certainly an advanced DIYer (professional aircraft mechanic and wind turbine technician). So I tried to remove the head... nope! Not happening! Not without breaking something! I can barely wind string, and can't replace the head. So, I download the PDF manual to make sure that I'm not missing something. Problem is the manual for the tool shows a completely different head than what I have! Are you kidding me?!?! I admit that I am biased towards thinking positively of DeWalt tools, but this one did not measure-up. I buy them because they LAST, this one didn't handle 1 month. Nothing's broken (that I know of), it's just seized from dirt/dust. Again, are you kidding me?! It's a trimmer! I so badly WANT to recommend this tool, but I can't, because if I can't wind the string, then it's useless!

                                      Uncomfortable and short-lasting.
uncomfortable and short-lasting. the battery is very difficult to remove. the angle at which it is made is very uncomfortable. Also, I have less than a year with it and I don't use it all the time, let's say I have used it for 25 to 30 times. and it already broke in the part where line a is placed.

This is incredibly power and has great runtime. Unfortunately, the quality and attention to detail are not up to DeWalt's typically high standards. I have three main issues: 1. The guard is very small. You can replace this, but you shouldn't have to at this price point. Make sure you wear long pants that you don't mind getting dirty. 2. The motor is on the head of the trimmer. This makes the balance pretty nice actually, but causes the air intake to easily clog with grass. Depending on how wet your grass is, this can be very difficult/annoying to clean out. Because the motor is at the end, the wiring has to run through the shaft. If anything happens to your shaft, you need to disassemble the motor in order to repair the shaft. Which brings me to the last issue... 3. The shaft is really weak. After using it once and bumping the spool twice to feed line, the shaft already had a noticeable bend to it. Once a bend starts, it only gets worse. Home Depot kindly exchanged it, but this is clearly a weak shaft design for a trimmer with bump feed string. Still, there are not a lot of great alternatives in the electric string trimmer space so these limitations aren't enough to make another option more compelling. But it is unfortunate for a company so focused on quality and longevity.

                                          Line Problems
Only had a chance to use trimmer once. Good weight - plenty of power. Line Broke Constantly. The trimmer head and Wire feed opening are out front so it's easy to bumb into objects which seem to shear the line off - then the line sucks into the spool housing. The idea behind the spool design seems ok - but in my unit the spool binds inside the housing and is VERY difficult to remove. This makes replacing or untangling the line VERY VERY difficult - and frustrating. Loading the line - insert the line into the retaining hole - which is the opposite direction of winding, so you flip the line over and wind one section. Then while keeping this line from unwinding - you do the same thing on the second level. This is not an easy process. Other models allow the line to pass through the head leaving even distance on both sides, then you just wind the line in - both sides at the same time. I spend more time untangling or rewinding the spool than cutting. Trying to contact Dewalt for replacement spool that chipped on the inside. Will see how it goes.

                                            Worst String Trimmer
I owned it for about a year and used it maybe a dozen times. Today, the string head started to smoke and stopped working. I only owned it for 10 months, not even a full year. Not worth the $299 price tag! When it didn't burn up, it worked fine. But it shouldn't burn up like it did after less than a year of use. Very disappointed and the service center is 3 hours away from me. Ugh!

                                              Failed within one year!
I thought this was going to be a great tool because I have many other Dewalt tools that have been just fine. After only a few uses this trimmer completely failed. Checking online I found that many others have had the same issue. Since it was out of warranty, I tried fixing it with no good result. I do not recommend this trimmer. Waste of money! I purchased a Husqvarna gasoline trimmer.
