I can't write emphatically enough how frustrating my experience with this product was. I seriously was close to throwing this sprayer through a wall. I am not a painting professional...I am renovating my house for sale (DIY) and thought buying a sprayer would be cheaper then renting one several times (boy was I wrong). Here's my experience: I read the reviews on this product and when I read that the user was experiencing a lot of clogs, I thought, "he must be using old paint". But, rest assured, I I purchased 15 gallons of BRAND NEW paint, was meticulous about mixing with dirt free paddles (and found no clogs ever in the input screen, sprayer filter, or the tip). The issues I experienced were ALL due to poor quality of the tip and guard. Monday 10 pm (machine 1): sprayed about 1,000 sq feet of newly textured ceilings with Kilz water based primer (5 gal bucket). The machine clogged about every 2 minutes...very frustrating (I had to keep turning the nozzle backwards to unclog it), but it did spray the entire bucket. Immediately after finishing the bucket, I followed instructions and cleaned machine meticulously. Tuesday 6 pm (machine 1): primed machine per instructions. With a BRAND NEW bucket of Kilz, the machine sprayed for 10 seconds and "clogged". Turned nozzle to clear the clog. 10 seconds...another clog. 10 seconds...another clog. I kept reversing the nozzle to clear the clog...and then the sprayer STOPPED WORKING. After screwing with it for an hour, I returned it to Home Depot (wasted a gallon of paint and 2 hours). Tuesday 8 pm (machine 2): returned from HD with a new machine. While following the instructions to prime it, I noticed the "prime button" was stuck. It seemed to delay the machine from priming initially, but it eventually began working (but it made me question the quality of the manufacturing process...being on the 2nd new machine and the button was already stuck -- didn't they check this in the factory?). Began spraying...10 seconds CLOG...10 seconds CLOG...10 seconds CLOG. I kept "reversing" the nozzle, would spray for a few seconds to "clear the clog", and then resume again (for 10 seconds). This went on for AN HOUR OR MORE. After meeting the definition of "insanity", I decided to stop clean the brand new machine (with the brand new paint) out. I flushed the filter in the paint bucket (which had no clogs), the sprayer handle (which had no clogs) and the tip (which had no clogs). But, I noticed something in the tip guard...the inner metal sleeve was separated from the orange plastic piece and the orange guard seemed to be "fraying". Undeterred, I grabbed a screwdriver, straightened the tip out and continued. After assembling machine and priming per instructions, I began spraying again. Sprayed for 10 seconds...CLOG. Sprayed for 10 seconds...CLOG. Sprayed for 10 seconds...CLOG. Frustrated ONCE AGAIN, I returned to Home Depot (9:45 pm) to return ANOTHER MACHINE. While at Home Depot, the man in the paint department explained..."Oh yeah, I've had 3 or 4 customers return their machines because the factory provided tips are of extremely low quality...it can cause a lot of frustration" (now he tells me). Tuesday 10 pm (machine 3): The Home Depot has been great. They provided me with a new machine and a FREE aftermarket Tip and Guard (I was so tired I couldn't paint any longer). The lesson? My experience was horrible (I have NO confidence the 3rd machine with aftermarket tip and guard will even work). To date, I have lost 2.5 gallons of paint, sprayed myself in the face and eyes with paint (clearing one of the 500 "clogs"), and am seriously behind in my renovation (was supposed to be installing lights last night). Positives: when it works, seems to have good power and does a nice job Negatives: Obviously, watch the tip and guard (seems to be sub-standard manufacturing), and the compressor, after 30 seconds of spraying, just stops. Not sure what this is, but you have to depress the handle and begin again to allow the machine to catch up.

Hello Bertram28,

We are sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with the X7. We are thinking that perhaps the tip size you were using was too small for the primer you were trying to spray. The X7 can support up to a 0.017 inch tip, such as a 517. The tip that ships with the X7 is a 515 with a 0.015 inch orifice. Spraying a material that is too think for the tip will result in continually clogging the tip. Using the correct size spray tip would eliminate your clogging issue. Another recommendation would be to strain the paint. That is always a good idea.

As a side note, all of our tips are made at our factory in Sioux Falls, SD. Our tips are the best on the market and are made to highest quality standards.

Also, the motor does not run constantly. Our airless sprayers only run the motor as needed to maintain the pressure.

If you do run into issues again, we ask that you give our Tech Support team a call so that one of our experts can help. They can be reached at 889.541.9788 M-F 7:30-5:30.

The Graco worked perfectly. After taping I was able to get a complete coat on the clapboard of my 4,000 sg. ft colonial in seven hours. And I was able to do a second coat the next day. It was worth every penny!

I don't normally write reviews on products but I've had such a positive experience I felt I had to share it. I bought this sprayer after reading several professional reviews. I had a really bad experience with an airless sprayer 15 years ago so I was pretty cautious about buying another one. My previous sprayer a top-of-line model (for back then) but I always had problems with over-spray and clean up was a long, horrible process after using it. So I took a long time before I finally decided to give this model a try. What a different experience with this sprayer! I used it to spray a clear water-based sealer on a back porch built with open rafters and a roof deck consisting of 2x6s, so there were a lot of seams to cover as I sprayed with this from below. I quickly got used to the sprayer and was able to finish the 60 foot by 30 foot roof is an afternoon. Over-spray was minimal, falling mostly on me. Cleanup took maybe 20 minutes afterward. This job would have taken me days with a roller and brush. This has truly been the best investment I've made in a long time!

Worked great. Used to epoxy barrier coat and bottom paint a 36' trawler. Very smooth, even application. Used a .17 tip. Handle filter started to clog after 4 gallons. Probably should have cleaned earlier!

        Flawless performance
I had a very pitched tongue and groove ceiling to paint and dreaded it but the sprayer and three sections of scaffolding made the job go really fast. First time using a paint sprayer and after reading the book and watching some videos I was spraying! Great sprayer for big jobs like mine. Tackling the exterior of the house next.

Watched a you tube before I got it. Seemed complicated, but I had it running in about 10 minutes. Sprayed 1500sq feet of shadow box fence in about an hour. Didn't do too much research, but $400 was about half what a painter wanted to charge. I thought the accessories were expensive, now I'm so excited by the results and time savings that I'm buying them all. Can't wait for spring so I can paint my garage, shed, and maybe even my house. Highly recommended!

The x-7 really lived up to my expectations.
I am very happy with my purchase. After all the prep work we did on our house we are absolutely thrilled with the finish. Not to mention I was able to spray my house and garage in 2 short autumn days. THANKS to all who designed and built my x7. I had to call cause my tip did spit a real small amount of paint, but after talking to a graco representative I didn't have my pressure up enough and that solved the only problem I had.

        What a Great Timesaver
I'm impressed...with airless painting and my new GRACO X-7! Decided to paint our 2,000 sqft ranch style home and the very large detached garage with RV parking (36 X 36). Initially, our thought was to enter into a contract to do this. On a fixed income, cost-of-doing projects is a strong consideration. After researching and looking at a number of vids on the internet and having over the years increased my skills in DIY projects, opted to buy an airless and "Go for it." Our project was estimated at 15 gallons primary color (just around 4,100 sqft of surface) and two gallons of trim color. Prep work took time and included a complete pressure washing over a three day period (and giving about a week to dry). Caulking, fixing some unwanted previous-owner openings in the pressboard siding, etc. And finally, I got to paint. That was the sweetest part of the whole project! I was amazed at how fast I could lay down paint (I alternated between the gun and a 20" extension [especially useful for the very high areas on the garage]) and then more amazed at the result. My wife and I marvel how 'clean and fresh' our two buildings look. [Note - as painting progressed, the look of "clean" prompted us to forego painting any trim a different color except around the entrance. And we opted to paint all gutters the house color.] Next project will be to paint the home inside, using the airless and the pressure roller attachment. Summary - absolutely impressed with the results, using the GRACO X-7. Pros: good instructions and vids; easy to 'get up and painting;' cleanup pretty straightforward Cons: None at this time.

        Time Saver!
I bought this because between my son in laws and have a lot to painting. I have used it on 2 outdoor decks and a gazebo. I am not sure how well it work indoors. My advice is to make sure you buy enough paint. Most paint types will tell you how many sq feet for a roller, brush or sprayer. I believe I used about 20-25% more paint BUT saved hours. Most of my issues were my own fault not the machine. Plan to cover everything and go overboard. Some spray drifted 20 feet away and got on some areas not covered. Also, when you change the nozzle position re-tighten the housing because it will leak all over your hand. I tried to change angles and it losend. Very easy to clean.

Hello Pops23, We are glad to hear that you found the X7 to be a time saver and very easy to clean. The photos of the gazebo look great. Thanks for sharing. You make some good suggestions. Cover anything you don't want overspray on and pay attention to the wind direction as it can carry the overspray. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for the product recommendation.

        Pumps are not very reliable.
I have owned this unit for 3 years and now I am putting my second pump in! the cost each time is about $250. so I would have been better off renting and returning or buying one that will last. Nothing more frustrating then setting everything up testing that it turns on first, then the pump won't pull paint! It does a good job when it works, it just doesn't last long enough to make it a good value!

        Excellent time saving quality product
The Graco X7 sprayer is an excellent time saving product. After reading all the reviews, I was prepared for set up and clean up issues but had none. Followed the quick start and clean up card attached to the sprayer and both were a breeze. Since this was the first time using an air sprayer, I knew I had to start in an area of the fence that was hidden. It took me about 100 feet of my six foot privacy fence to get it right and use the correct application method. The remaining 460 feet was effortless. Covering an area of over 6000 square feet using Behr stain took only 11 hours which included set up and clean up. Looking forward to using this on other projects on my "honey do" list. Thanks Home Depot for a quality product at a great price (and saving me precious time).

        What a time saver
Used my new X7 to spray Behr Premium semi-transparent stain on my large deck. Covered up the plants and house with Painters plastic and a meticulous taping job. Followed the instructions on the stain and used the 515 spray tip and had my wife back roll with a 5/16" microfiber roller. We knocked this out in no time. Hand brushing all that lattice would have been a chore. The sprayer performed flawlessly. I bought the swivel and the spray hose whip as people suggested. Also, as people have mentioned, the DVD instructions are awesome. This was a water based stain so cleanup was a breeze using the garden hose flush. Lastly, grab yourself a spray shield- 36" x 9" with handle. A great tool to keep from spraying unwanted areas. Go to YouTube and watch videos of people using an airless sprayer. Next up will be spraying my new T1-11 sided shed.

Me and my son used X7 to spray our cabin with Sherwin Williams Woodscapes solid color stain. It worked great! Over two days he sprayed about 90% of building in about 5 hours. This included applying tape over windows from ladder. Most of spraying was also from a ladder.

        Too complicated
If you like prepping, following twenty minutes of instructions to get started, then painting for ten minutes followed by another hour of clean up this is the sprayer for you. Also good if you like burning through a gallon of 75 dollar paint in ten minutes. The wall looks good though.
